On the morning of November 02, 2020, a Vietnam Airlines flight taking off from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City had to make an emergency stop when a passenger lit a fire on the plane.
The incident happened on Vietnam Airlines flight VN243 operating the route Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City scheduled to take off at 8:00 am on November 02, 2020. When the plane just rolled to the runway, it was discovered that the passenger sitting in row 20A had turned on the lighter right on the plane when the flight was about to take off. Soon after, the crew stopped departure and informed the airport authorities about the incident.
Based on the above behavior, this passenger has been administratively violated according to Point d Clause 5 Article 26 of Decree No. 162/2018/NĐ-CP of Vietnam’s Government on administrative penalties for civil aviation offenses. To be specific, sanction for this behavior is as follows:
5. A fine ranging from VND 7,000,000 (seven million) to VND 10,000,000 (ten million) shall be imposed for committing one of the following violations:
d) Disrupting, inciting or persuading other people to cause disruption to security and order on board an aircraft but the violation is not serious enough to cause the violating entity to face a criminal prosecution;
Lighters, gas cans, matches, flammable liquids, etc. are prohibited items when brought on board in checked and hand luggage, but the above passenger violated and caused a fire on the plane as a result. This is a dangerous behavior for passengers as well as those present on the flight, due to timely detection, there has been no loss of life or property, but this is a dangerous behavior for aviation safety and needs to be prevented and handled promptly.
