On January 23, 2025, the Minister of Transport of Vietnam issued Circular 05/2025/TT-BGTVT promulgating the national technical regulations on electric motor propulsion systems installed on inland waterway vessels.
The National Technical Regulation on Electric Engine Propulsion Systems Installed on Inland Waterway Vessels, code QCVN 126:2025/BGTVT, was drafted by the Vietnam Register, submitted for approval by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, appraised by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and promulgated by the Minister of Transport pursuant to Circular 05/2025/TT-BGTVT.
QCVN 126:2025/BGTVT stipulates technical requirements for the design, installation, and operation of electric propulsion systems or hybrid propulsion systems (hereinafter referred to as "Electric Engine Propulsion Systems") installed on inland waterway vessels subject to QCVN 25:2015/BGTVT (hereinafter referred to as "Vessels").
- The supply voltage for the electric propulsion systems shall not exceed the following values:
+ DC electric systems with voltage below 1500 V;
+ Single-phase AC systems; Three-phase AC systems with voltages up to 1000 V;
QCVN 126:2025/BGTVT applies to organizations and individuals involved with Vessels using Electric Engine Propulsion Systems within the above-mentioned scope, including: the Vietnam Register (hereinafter referred to as "Register"), vessel owners, design units, facilities for new construction, conversion, restoration, repair, and operation of Vessels, manufacturing facilities of materials, products, and equipment for Electric Engine Propulsion Systems installed on Vessels, organizations and individuals engaged in the export and import of Vessels and materials, and equipment for Electric Engine Propulsion Systems installed on Vessels.
Circular 05/2025/TT-BGTVT comes into effect from August 1, 2025.
