Precedent is recognized and used in adjudication in many countries around the world. Vietnam also allows the application of precedents. The Supreme People's Court of Vietnam has published the first 06 precedents, and from June 01, 2016, the precedents are officially applied in adjudication nationwide.
On September 14, 2016, the Supreme People's Court held a workshop to gather opinions on judgments and decisions projected to be developed into case law.

The commercial business case regarding "Dispute over the contract for sale and purchase of goods" is published according to Decision 698/QD-CA dated October 17, 2016 by the Chief Justice of the Supreme People’s Court of Vietnam.
On July 11, 2017, the Supreme People's Court of Vietnam issued Official Dispatch 146/SPC-PC regarding the reference and application of precedents in adjudication.
Case law is no longer just a subject of research and discussion among legal scholars, but has become a tool and method applied in adjudication activities in our country. After two times of signing Decisions and approval by the Supreme People's Court, currently, 10 case laws have been published and can be applied in practice. The application of case law in resolving cases is, has been, and will be a new step in the judicial reform process of our Communist Party and State.
Administrative case "Appeal against the decision on compensation, support, and resettlement when the state recovers land" announced according to Decision 698/QD-CA dated October 17, 2016, by the Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court.
On October 19, the Supreme People's Court (TAND) held a press conference to introduce 04 new case precedents, supplementing the 6 case precedents previously announced.
7 cassations include 01/2017/KDTM-GDT, 14/2017/KDTM-GDT, 17/2016/KDTM-GDT, 02/2011/DS-GDT, 394/2012/DS-GDT, 405/2012/DS-GDT, 573/2013/DS-GDT. Those cassations have been selected as precedents in Vietnam.
