Tattooing to Avoid Military Service: Is It Possible?

When the 12th-grade students are diligently equipping themselves with knowledge to prepare for a major turning point in their lives, it is also nearly time for the country to call for the implementation of military service. The four words "Military service" may sound sacred to some; to others, they may sound exhausting and they seek ways to evade it.

Military service is a noble obligation, a sacred duty for every citizen who reaches the eligible age. It is called an obligation, meaning it is compulsory, but it will be more admirable if all citizens voluntarily, eagerly contribute a bit of effort for the development of the country. However, it is not that simple.

On the internet, there are rampant questions like "How to avoid military service?" or similar queries. The responses are listed clearly as if answering a written exam. Notably, some cases involve getting a tattoo to avoid military service.

So, can getting a tattoo exempt someone from military service? The answer is no.

Previously, as stipulated in Point d, Clause 2, Article 4 of Circular 167/2010/TT-BQP concerning recruitment standards: "Citizens with tattoos (by needle) featuring horrifying, bizarre, provocative, violent images that cause repulsion in visible areas such as the face, neck, arms (from the lower third of the arm downwards); legs (from the lower third of the thigh downwards), will not be enlisted in the Army." Reading this content, young people rushed to get tattoos, appearing "cool" while avoiding military service, conveniently hitting two targets with one shot.

But don't dream on, Circular 140/2015/TT-BQP issued to replace Circular 167 has abolished the regulation that exempts those with offensive tattoos from military enlistment. Therefore, no matter how you tattoo, military service must be fulfilled.
