Responding to the Risk of Drought, Water Shortage, and Saltwater Intrusion in the Mekong Delta

Recently, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam issued Directive 36/CT-TTg on proactively implementing measures to respond to the risks of drought, water shortage, and saltwater intrusion during the dry season of 2020-2021 in the Mekong Delta.

To proactively implement measures and solutions for drought prevention, water shortage, and salinity intrusion, ensuring water sources for production and civil life, especially in the dry months of 2020-2021, the Government directs the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-administered cities in the Mekong Delta region to closely monitor developments, hydrometeorological forecast information, and salinity intrusion situations, to proactively develop and implement plans for drought prevention, water shortage, and salinity intrusion for the dry season of 2020-2021 with scenarios for the potential impacts of drought, water shortage, and salinity intrusion suitable to the actual local conditions, including extreme salinity intrusion response scenarios as occurred in 2015-2016 and 2019-2020.

At the same time, carry out appropriate seasonal and crop restructuring, ensuring early sowing of the Winter-Spring 2020-2021 crop in coastal areas to minimize the impact of salinity intrusion; prioritize the use of fragrant rice varieties, specialty rice, high-quality rice, short-growth-cycle rice, and salt-tolerant, acid-tolerant rice varieties to facilitate water supply for irrigation, ensuring economical and efficient use of water.
