On August 24, 2024, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam issued Decision 895/QD-TTg approving the National Forestry Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

Decision 895/QD-TTg in 2024 outlines the Orientation for regional forestry development in Vietnam until 2030 as follows:

- Northern Midland and Mountainous Region: Total forest area and planned forestry land for the period 2021 - 2030 is 6,065.1 thousand hectares, including: 572.4 thousand hectares of special-use forest land; 2,220.9 thousand hectares of protection forest land and 3,258.2 thousand hectares of production forest land. The forest cover rate will reach 55.4% by 2030.

- Red River Delta Region: Total forest area and planned forestry land for the period 2021 - 2030 is 491.8 thousand hectares, including: 104.2 thousand hectares of special-use forest land; 141.5 thousand hectares of protection forest land and 246.1 thousand hectares of production forest land. The forest cover rate will reach 20.6% by 2030.

- North Central and Central Coastal Region: Total forest area and planned forestry land for the period 2021 - 2030 is 5,819.2 thousand hectares, including: 983.7 thousand hectares of special-use forest land; 2,048.6 thousand hectares of protection forest land and 2,786.8 thousand hectares of production forest land. The forest cover rate will reach 54.6% by 2030.

- Central Highlands: Total forest area and planned forestry land for the period 2021 - 2030 is 2,730.4 thousand hectares, including: 524.7 thousand hectares of special-use forest land; 579.3 thousand hectares of protection forest land and 1,626.4 thousand hectares of production forest land. The forest cover rate will reach 46.7% by 2030.

- Southeast Region: Total forest area and planned forestry land for the period 2021 - 2030 is 464.9 thousand hectares, including: 194.4 thousand hectares of special-use forest land; 151.0 thousand hectares of protection forest land and 119.5 thousand hectares of production forest land. The forest cover rate will reach 18.9% by 2030.

- Mekong Delta Region: Total forest area and planned forestry land for the period 2021 - 2030 is 290.7 thousand hectares, including: 75.5 thousand hectares of special-use forest land; 88.2 thousand hectares of protection forest land and 127.0 thousand hectares of production forest land. The forest cover rate will reach 5.6% by 2030.

Responsibilities of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Implementing the National Forestry Planning for the Period 2021-2030, with a Vision to 2050 in Vietnam

- Responsible for the accuracy of data, documents, system of diagrams, maps, and databases in the planning dossier, ensuring consistency with the content of this Decision, conforming to the law on planning and related regulations; storing and preserving the approved planning dossier according to the conformable.

Within 30 days from the date the National Forestry Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 is approved, complete the handover to localities with forests of digital maps, scale 1/100,000 (including: Current forest status map, Planned system map of special-use, protection, production forests; Infrastructure development orientation diagram for forestry by province and centrally affiliated city).

- Organize the announcement and publicity of the Planning according to the law on planning; develop an implementation plan for the Planning; provide relevant data to be updated into the national information and database system on planning according to regulations; advise and propose necessary tasks and solutions according to the law on planning and related laws.

- Preside and cooperate with ministries and central authorities, People's Committees of provinces and centrally affiliated cities to manage and organize the implementation of the planning. Periodically organize reports, evaluate the implementation of the planning at the end of each medium-term phase 2021 - 2025 and 2026 - 2030; review and assess the achievement of the Planning goals to report to the competent authority for consideration and adjustment of the planning suitable to the actual conditions of each period.

- Participate in developing and implementing policies, plans, programs, projects, and schemes in coordination with the Planning's requirements.

- In case of changes in the national land use planning criteria, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development proactively adjusts the forest planning criteria to fit and integrate into the national forestry planning.
