Recently, the Ministry of Public Security has submitted the Draft Law on ensuring road traffic order and safety to the National Assembly of Vietnam for consideration. This Draft Law has stipulated the safe distance between two vehicles when participating in traffic in Vietnam.
Specifically, according to the Draft Law on ensuring road traffic order and safety of Vietnam, when operating a vehicle in road traffic, the driver or operator of special-use motorcycles must keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of their vehicle; where there is a sign "Minimum distance between two vehicles", operators must keep the distance not less than the value written on the sign. The safe distance between two vehicles when participating in traffic on the road is regulated as follows:
In dry road conditions, the safe distance for each speed is specified as follows:
- The operating speed is 60 km/h, corresponding to a minimum safe distance of 35 meters.
- The operating speed is above 60 km/h to 80 km/h, corresponding to a minimum safe distance of 55 meters.
- The operating speed is above 80 km/h to 100 km/h, corresponding to a minimum safe distance of 70 meters.
- The operating speed is above 100 km/h to 120 km/h, corresponding to a minimum safe distance of 100 meters.
- When operating a vehicle at a speed below 60 km/h, the driver must actively keep a safe distance suitable for the vehicle in front of his/her vehicle; this distance depends on the density of vehicles and the actual traffic situation to ensure traffic safety.
When it rains, there is fog, the road surface is slippery, the road has winding terrain, steep pass, limited visibility, the driver must adjust the appropriate safe distance greater than the value indicated on the sign or the value specified in dry road conditions.
