Requirements for Associate's Degree Knowledge Volume in Western Musical Instrument Performance

Recently, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs issued Circular 40/2018/TT-BLDTBXH stipulating the minimum amount of knowledge and competency requirements that learners must achieve after graduating from intermediate and college levels for majors and trades in the fields of arts, fine arts, and languages.

Circular 40/2018/TT-BLDTBXH prescribes the minimum knowledge volume that students must achieve upon graduation with an associate degree in Western musical instrument performance as follows:

- Identify the position and role of performing artists participating in artistic programs, and the influence and impact of art on the economy, politics, culture, and society;- Describe the basic knowledge of the history of Vietnamese and world music, foundational knowledge of the music field such as solfeggio, recording, harmony, etc.;- Analyze the fundamental and systematic knowledge of Western musical instrument performance techniques, understanding performance methods from classical to contemporary, and performance techniques;- Identify specialized knowledge and techniques to practice, and build musical performance works in Western musical instruments to meet the set requirements;- Present technical requirements for works written for solo, chamber ensemble, and symphony orchestra such as Symphony, Overture, Rondo, Sonata, Concerto, etc.; contemporary Pop/Rock music styles;- Describe the basic performance techniques of musical instruments to practice and perform those techniques;- Describe related art forms in the field, such as stage performance art, makeup art, costume design, etc.;- Describe forms of stage performance, and the position and role of performing artists on stage according to different musical genres and specific artistic performance programs;- List specialized audio equipment, tools, and main instruments used in performances and explain their uses;- Present methods to ensure the safety of people and equipment during performances;- Present basic knowledge of information technology, methods to utilize musical software, and popular music applications on the media network to serve the field;- Identify fundamental legal elements of the State, principles of information exploitation and use, copyright regulations, and intellectual property;- Present basic knowledge of politics, culture, society, law, national defense, security, and physical education as regulated.

Additionally, this Circular also specifies the skills that students must achieve upon graduation with an associate degree in Western musical instrument performance as follows:

- Select the correct and complete traditional instruments when participating in practice and performance;- Proficiently use basic performance techniques of the field; methods to practice and perform those techniques;- Proficiently practice fundamental techniques (scales, etudes), arranging, orchestration, and ensemble rehearsals;- Read and transcribe different musical clefs;- Accompany, improvise solo; arrange, rehearse orchestras, and music groups;- Demonstrate basic technical and performance skills of instrumental music works in different genres through solo instrument performances, orchestras, bands, and music groups;- Perform solo, and ensemble works in orchestras, bands, and group music for different genres such as Symphony, Overture, Rondo, Sonata, Concerto, and works in Pop/Rock music styles;- Develop chamber orchestral works following the correct style of each composition and author;- Flexibly approach different musical genres and performance forms;- Perform, master the stage according to the contents of classical chamber music works; improvise with Pop/Rock performing artists;- Proficiently use audio equipment, music software, utilize media technology applications, and ensure the safety of people and performance instruments;- Flexibly and appropriately apply soft skills such as presentation skills, negotiation skills, communication skills, situational handling skills, conflict resolution skills, teamwork skills, etc. into the working process effectively;- Use basic information technology as regulated; exploit, process, and apply information technology in professional work in the field;- Use basic foreign languages, achieving level 2/6 in the Vietnamese Foreign Language Proficiency Framework; apply foreign languages to professional work in the field.
