Ordinance on the Vietnam Coast Guard Force 2008 was promulgated on January 26, 2008. One of the notable contents in this Ordinance is the provision on circumstances in which the Vietnam Coast Guard Force is permitted to use firearms while performing their duties.
To be specific, according to the provisions stipulated in Article 15 of the Ordinance on the Vietnam Coast Guard Force 2008, when performing their duties, the Vietnam Coast Guard is authorized to use firearms in the following circumstances:
When the violator uses weapons to resist or employs other measures directly threatening the lives and safety of the Vietnam Coast Guard personnel and vehicles.
When pursuing individuals and vehicles engaged in serious violations, if not utilizing weapons, these individuals and vehicles may escape.
To protect citizens when they are directly threatened by others.
Note: In the aforementioned instances of authorized firearm use, Vietnam Coast Guard officers and soldiers are permitted to fire at targets only after having ordered them to stop or issued warning shots without effect, except in urgent cases; for complex situations significantly affecting sovereignty and national security, it is necessary to report to competent authorities for decision.
