April 17, 2020, the Minister of Transport issued Circular 08/2020/TT-BGTVT stipulating the National Technical Regulation on Inland Waterway Signage for Vietnam.
To be specific:, Circular 08/2020/TT-BGTVT stipulates the base of the flow direction to serve as the basis for regulations on the right bank, left bank, or right side, left side of the navigable channel, determined according to the direction of the flood flow.

- For inland rivers and canals: According to the direction of flow from upstream to downstream, from the inland to the sea mouth, the right-hand side is the right bank, and the left-hand side is the left bank.
- For coastal and bay areas: According to the direction from North to South, the right-hand side is the right side of the channel, and the left-hand side is the left side of the channel; according to the direction from East to West, the right-hand side is the right side of the channel, and the left-hand side is the left side of the channel; from the shore to the sea, the right-hand side is the right side of the channel, and the left-hand side is the left side of the channel.
- On natural lakes or artificial lakes: In the case of lakes with a flow, it follows the main channel axis from upstream looking downstream, and for branch channel sections, it follows the direction looking towards the main channel axis where the right-hand side is the right bank, and the left-hand side is the left bank. In the case of lakes without a flow, it follows the regulations in clause 1.4.4, Section 1.4 of the National Technical Regulation on Inland Waterway Signage of Vietnam (Registration Code: QCVN 39:2020/BGTVT).
