Guidelines for Determining the Location of Specialized Hydrometeorological Stations

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment recently issued Circular 30/2018/TT-BTNMT stipulating technical regulations on monitoring and providing meteorological and hydrological information and data for specialized meteorological and hydrological stations.

The location of the specialized meteorological and hydrological stations will have different positions. To be specific:

- Surface meteorological stations, agricultural meteorological stations:- Must be open and not obstructed by any objects;- Must represent the observation area, providing objective and accurate observation results.- Upper air meteorological stations and weather radar stations:- Must be open and not obstructed by any objects;- There should not be any obstacles facing an angle greater than 60° at the point of releasing the radiosonde;- Radar beams should not be blocked by the terrain; there should be no obstacles appearing at scanning angles greater than half the upper beamwidth above the horizon.- Hydrological stations:- Water level observation location: ensure representativeness for the observation area; capable of observing water levels from the lowest to the highest;- Water flow and suspended sediment flow observation location: minimize the impact of waves, wind, vortices, debris flow, and floating objects; the riverbed should have few or no obstacles; the riverbank should be stable.- Marine stations:- Wind observation location must be open and not obstructed by any objects, ensuring the characteristics of wind factors at the observation area;- Water level and wave observation location should ensure representativeness for the observation area, open towards the sea, capable of observing water levels from the lowest to the highest.

See related regulations in Circular 30/2018/TT-BTNMT effective from February 11, 2019.
