The general education program is implemented according to the following schedule:

1. From the school year 2020-2021 for 1st grade.

2. From the school year 2021-2022 for 2nd and 6th grades.

3. From the school year 2022-2023 for 3rd, 7th, and grade 10s.

4. From the school year 2023-2024 for 4th, 8th, and 11th grades.

Based on Article 18 of the Regulations on Lower Secondary Schools, Upper Secondary Schools, and Multi-level Schools issued with Circular 32/2020/TT-BGDDT stipulated as follows:

Textbooks, Teaching Equipment, and Reference Materials

1. Textbooks used in lower secondary schools are approved by the Minister of Education and Training; the provincial People's Committee organizes the selection of textbooks as per the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. Lower secondary schools guide teachers and students in using textbooks as per the legal regulations.

2. Teaching equipment used in schools must be in the list of teaching equipment issued by the Ministry of Education and Training and other teaching equipment as per the general education program.

3. Schools select and equip teaching equipment, reference publications for teaching and educational activities following the regulations of the Minister of Education and Training.

Based on Clause 1 of Article 28 in the Education Law 2019, the educational levels and age groups of general education are as follows:

Educational Levels and Age Groups of General Education

1. The educational levels and age groups of general education are regulated as follows:

a) Primary education is conducted over 5 school years, from 1st grade to the end of 5th grade. The age of students entering 1st grade is 6 years old and is calculated by the year;

b) Lower secondary education is conducted over 4 school years, from 6th grade to the end of 9th grade. Students entering 6th grade must have completed the primary education program. The age of students entering 6th grade is 11 years old and is calculated by the year;

c) Upper secondary school education is conducted over 3 school years, from grade 10 to the end of 12th grade. Students entering grade 10 must have a lower secondary school diploma. The age of students entering grade 10 is 15 years old and is calculated by the year.

2. Cases in which students are allowed to skip grades, study at an older age than the age stipulated in Clause 1 of this Article include:

a) Students may skip grades if they have early intellectual development;

b) Students may study at an older age than the stipulated age in cases such as repeating grades, students in areas with particularly difficult socio-economic conditions, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students with underdeveloped physical or intellectual abilities, orphaned students without support, students from poor households, students returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law.
