The Department of Work Safety is a unit under the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs, with the function of advising and assisting the Minister in implementing the state management function in the field of occupational safety and health; working hours, rest hours, occupational accident insurance, occupational diseases; managing state services in the field of occupational safety and health according to the provisions of the law.
The international trading name in English is Department of Work Safety, abbreviated as DWS.

The Department of Work Safety has the following tasks and powers:
(1) Research, form, and submit to the Ministry the following:
- Draft laws, resolutions of the National Assembly, draft ordinances, resolutions of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly, draft decrees of the Government, decisions of the Prime Minister, and resolutions, projects, and programs assigned by the Ministry in the field of occupational safety and health; working hours, rest hours, occupational accident insurance, and occupational diseases according to the provisions of the law;
- Strategies, long-term, medium-term, annual plans, national programs, and projects assigned by the law;
- Draft circulars and other documents on state management in the field of occupational safety and health within the management scope of the Ministry;
- National records on safety, occupational health; regulations, guidelines for quality inspection of specialized products, goods related to occupational safety according to the provisions of the law;
- Regarding occupational safety and health:
+ National standards; national technical standards on occupational safety and health within the management scope of the Ministry according to the provisions of the law;
+ Issuing a list of jobs with strict requirements for occupational safety and health; a list of strenuous, harmful, and dangerous occupations, works; and extremely strenuous, harmful, and dangerous occupations, works;
+ Guiding the assurance of occupational safety and health for certain specific workers and for production and business establishments according to the provisions of the law;
+ Guiding the collection, storage, synthesis, provision, publication, and evaluation of the situation of occupational accidents and serious technical incidents causing occupational safety and health according to the provisions of the law.
- Regarding labor protection regime:
+ Regime, policies for prevention, risk sharing in occupational accidents, occupational diseases;
+ Regulations on classification of labor according to labor conditions; provision of personal protective equipment in labor;
+ Regulations on compensation, benefits for occupational accidents, and occupational diseases; training with material rewards for workers working under hazardous, harmful conditions;
+ Issuing a list of light jobs for people aged 13 to under 15; list of occupations, jobs for people aged 15 to under 18 who can work overtime, work at night; list of occupations, workplaces causing damage to the physical, mental, and personality development of adolescents according to the provisions of the law; list of occupations, jobs affecting reproductive function and child-rearing; occupational safety, health, working hours, rest hours for domestic helpers, people working in the fields of arts, physical education, sports, maritime, and aviation.
- Regarding occupational safety and health training: implementing state management of occupational safety and health training activities according to the provisions of the law;
- Regarding the management of machinery, equipment, materials, substances, and inspection of types of machinery, equipment, and materials with strict requirements for occupational safety:
+ Implementing state management of inspection activities for types of machinery, equipment, and materials with strict requirements for occupational safety according to the provisions of the law;
+ Issuing a list of types of machinery, equipment, materials, and substances with strict requirements for occupational safety within the management scope of the Ministry based on proposals from relevant Ministries and sectors according to the provisions of the law;
+ Issuing procedures for inspecting machinery, equipment, materials, and managing substances with strict requirements for occupational safety within the state management scope of the Ministry.
(2) Guide, organize the implementation and inspection of the implementation of legal provisions in the field of occupational safety and health; working hours and rest hours; and national programs on occupational safety and health within the responsibilities of the Ministry according to the provisions of the law.
(3) Guide and organize the implementation of reporting and statistics on occupational safety and health; construct and manage a database system on occupational safety and health according to the provisions of the law.
(4) Coordinate the investigation of occupational accidents and technical incidents causing occupational safety and health problems; organize the collection, storage, synthesis, provision, publication, and evaluation of the situation of occupational accidents and serious technical incidents causing occupational safety and health problems.
(5) Organize the implementation of information, propaganda, dissemination, and legal education on occupational safety and health, working hours, rest hours, occupational accident insurance, and occupational diseases as assigned by the Ministry; assist the Ministry in implementing the national information network on occupational safety and health.
(6) Guide and organize the implementation of the Month of Action on occupational safety and health; commendation works in occupational safety and health as assigned by the Ministry.
(7) Carry out specialized inspections on occupational safety and health as prescribed by law.
(8) Assist the Ministry in guiding and implementing the state management of public career services in the field of occupational safety and health within the Ministry's responsibilities as prescribed by law.
(9) Assist the Ministry in implementing the state management of occupational accident insurance, occupational diseases as prescribed by law; take charge of and coordinate with relevant units in managing financial resources for the management of occupational accident insurance, occupational diseases assigned to the Ministry of Labor - Invalids, and Social Affairs as prescribed by law.
(10) Participate in providing opinions to the Ministry of Health in issuing a list of occupational diseases; provide opinions to other ministries and sectors in issuing procedures for inspecting machinery, equipment, materials, and managing substances with strict requirements for occupational safety within the management scope of that ministry or sector as prescribed by law.
(11) Assist the Ministry in performing the functions of the standing agency of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health; take charge of and coordinate with other ministries, agencies under the Ministry, agencies under the Government, and provincial People's Committees in implementing the coordination mechanism for occupational safety and health.
(12) Assist the Ministry in managing non-governmental organizations operating in the field of occupational safety and health as prescribed by law.
(13) Implement international cooperation and integration in the field of occupational safety and health, working hours, rest hours, occupational accident insurance, and occupational diseases as assigned by the Ministry; assist the Ministry in performing the role of coordinating the occupational safety and health network of Southeast Asian countries (ASEAN-OSHNET).
(14) Conduct scientific research; participate in training and capacity building for officials, civil servants, employees, and workers in the field of occupational safety and health, working hours, rest hours, occupational accident insurance, and occupational diseases as assigned by the Ministry.
(15) Provide advice and assistance to the Ministry in establishing codes and standards for professional titles in specialized fields within public career units in the field of occupational safety and health as assigned by the Ministry.
(16) Manage officials, public employees, and workers; facilities, finances, and assets in accordance with the law and the Ministry's management hierarchy.
(17) Perform the tasks of the information and inquiry agency on technical barriers in trade of the Ministry; fulfill the tasks of a member of the Inter-Agency Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade as assigned by the Ministry.
(18) Perform other tasks as prescribed by law and assigned by the Minister.
