Military Service: 03 Important Timeline Milestones to Pay Attention to (Illustrative Image)

1. Military Health Checkup Timeline

According to Article 40 of the Military Service Law, the health checkup period is from November 01 to December 31 every year.

2. Conscription Timeline

Every year, citizens are called to enlist and fulfill their obligations to join the People’s Public Security once in February or March as stipulated in Article 33 of the Military Service Law.

In necessary cases for national defense and security reasons, citizens may be called to enlist and fulfill their obligations to join the People’s Public Security for a second time.

For localities affected by disasters or dangerous epidemics, the timeline for calling for conscription and fulfilling the obligations to join the People’s Public Security can be adjusted.

Additionally, according to Article 3 of Circular 148/2018/TT-BQP, the selection and conscription of citizens is conducted annually based on the decision of the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam.

3. Duration of Military Service

According to Article 21 of the Military Service Law, the service duration during peacetime for non-commissioned officers and soldiers is 24 months.

However, the Minister of National Defense may decide to extend the service duration of non-commissioned officers and soldiers by up to 06 months in the following cases:

- To ensure combat readiness;- While performing tasks of disaster prevention, epidemic control, rescue, and relief.

The service duration of non-commissioned officers and soldiers during wartime or in a state of emergency concerning national defense is carried out according to the general mobilization or partial mobilization orders.

Note: The calculation of the service duration of non-commissioned officers and soldiers is specifically as follows:

- The start date of the service duration of non-commissioned officers and soldiers: The day of induction and reception of the soldiers.

In cases where there is no centralized induction and reception, it is calculated from the day the People's Army unit receives the soldiers.

- The discharge date: After 24 months from the start date of the conscription, as decided by the competent authority.

The duration of desertion and the duration serving prison sentences at detention facilities are not counted in the service period.

Example: Le Thanh Huy, born on April 15, 2001. From April 15, 2019, Huy turned 18 and became eligible for conscription. Thus, the 03 important timeline milestones for Huy to fulfill his military obligations are as follows:

  1. Health checkup date: From November 01, 2019, to December 31, 2019.
  2. Conscription date: Around February 2020 or March 2020.
  3. Discharge date: Assuming Huy is conscripted in February 2020, his discharge date will be February 2022.

Citizens of eligible age for military service need to pay attention to the above 03 timeline milestones to exercise their rights and responsibilities as well as to demonstrate their patriotism.
