Which Vessels Are Required to Equip AIS Devices?

Circular 39/2018/TT-BGTVT was issued by the Ministry of Transport, promulgating the National Technical Regulation on the Classification and Construction of Inland Waterway Vessels - 2nd Amendment:2018 QCVN 72:2013/BGTVT.

According to the regulations set forth in Circular 39, the following vessels must be equipped with AIS devices:

- Passenger ships carrying more than 20 passengers;- High-speed passenger ships operating on maritime routes or crossing borders;- Passenger ships operating on routes from shore to islands or between islands, ferries VR-SB class;- Vessels involved in transporting dredged material during dredging, maintenance of channels, service vessels for management, maintenance, and repairs; buoy-laying and retrieving vessels; traffic regulation and anti-drift vessels ensuring inland waterway traffic safety;- Motor vessels VR-SB class with a total tonnage GT ≥ 500 (except for vessels running a dedicated route from shore to island or between islands with a route length not exceeding 15 km), vessels carrying dangerous goods, container ships, vessels carrying construction materials;- Motor vessels VR-SI and VR-SII class with a total tonnage GT ≥ 800.
