Preservation duration of materials is the period of time necessary to retain records and documents from the year the job ends. How is this preservation duration of materials regulated according to Vietnam’s law on archives?
According to Article 17 of the Law on Archives 2011 of Vietnam, the preservation duration of materials is prescribed as follows:
First, materials subject to permanent preservation are those of timeless meaning and value.
Materials subject to permanent preservation include those on viewpoints, undertakings, policies, fundamentals, strategies; national key and target programs, projects and schemes; those on land and housing and other materials prescribed by competent authorities.
Second, materials subject to preservation for a definite term are those other than the ones specified in clause 1 of this Article and their preservation term is defined less than 70 years.
Third, invalid materials subject to removal for disposal are those containing the same information or with expired preservation duration under regulations and no longer necessary for practical activities and scientific and historical research.
