Hanoi-Vietnam: Criteria for assessing projects sent to the National Science and Engineering Contest

The Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training issued Circular 32/2017/TT-BGDDT on amendments to several articles of the Regulation of the National Science and Engineering Contest for lower and upper secondary school students promulgated with Circular 38/2012/TT-BGDDT.

Criteria for assessing projects sent to the National Science and Engineering Contest in Vietnam as amended by Circular 32 as follows:

Scientific Projects

Engineering Projects

1. Research Questions (10 points)

1. Research problem (10 points)

- Focused and clear goals;

- Identification of contributions to the field of research;

- The capability to evaluate by scientific methods.

- Description of the actual demand or problem to be solved;

- Determination of the criteria for the proposed solution;

- Explanation of the urgency;

2. Design and method (15 points)

- The plan well designed and the effective  data collection methods;

- Relevant and complete parameters, parameters and variables.

- The exploration of different options to meet needs or solve problems;

- Identification of solutions;

- Development of prototypes/models.

3. Implementation: data collection, analysis and interpretation (20 points)

- Systematic collection and analysis of data;

- Repeatability of results;

- Application of appropriate mathematical and statistical methods;

- The data sufficiently collected to support explanations and conclusions.

- Prototype demonstrating the intended design;

- Prototype tested under various conditions/trials.

- Prototype showing technological proficiency and completeness.

4. Creativity (20 points)

The project demonstrates significant creativity in one or more of the above criteria.

5. Presentation (35 points)

a) Poster (10 points)

- Logical layout of materials;

- Clarity of graphs and captions;

- Support from display materials.

b) Interview (25 points)

- Clear, concise, and profound answers to questions;

- Understanding of the scientific basis related to the project;

- Understanding of the interpretation and limitations of results and conclusions;

- Degree of independence in executing the project;

- Acknowledgment of potential scientific, social, and/or economic impacts;

- Quality of ideas for further research;

- Contribution and understanding of the project by all members for collective projects.
