Forms of Groundwater Resource Maps at a 1:50,000 Scale

On June 21, 2013, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment issued Circular 15/2013/TT-BTNMT stipulating technical regulations for creating groundwater resource maps at a scale of 1:50,000.

The purpose of establishing the 1:50,000 scale groundwater resource map is to serve the state management of water resources and the management of groundwater exploitation and use in the provinces and centrally-run cities, and intra-provincial river basins (the intra-provincial river basins are determined according to Decision 341/QD-BTNMT dated March 23, 2012; as a basis for the planning of groundwater resources and socio-economic development planning in the provinces and centrally-run cities, and intra-provincial river basins;...

To be specific, the 1:50,000 scale groundwater resource map format must conform to Article 9 of Circular 15/2013/TT-BTNMT as follows:

- The map title and frame are specified according to the appendix attached to this regulation.- If the map consists of multiple sheets, a connecting diagram is displayed in the top right corner of the map frame.- The map legend is placed to the right of the map, and the cross-sections are placed below the map. If feasible, the legend and cross-sections can be placed within the frame in an appropriate position.

Additionally, Circular 15 also stipulates that the 1:50,000 scale groundwater resource map must display the content of research results that have been conducted to assess groundwater resources at a 1:50,000 scale. The content and information shown on the 1:50,000 scale groundwater resource map are based on the following principles:

- Water-bearing and non-water-bearing objects are shown according to their distribution boundaries;- Potential exploitable reserves are shown in regional form;- Assessed groundwater reserves are shown by approved reserve levels, represented by boundary frames and reserve values of the levels;- Groundwater quality is shown in line and point forms;- Contaminated and polluted areas are shown by point form (contamination points) and regional background dot form (contaminated regions);- Artificial structures such as hydrological monitoring stations, boreholes, dug wells, groundwater outflow sources, are shown by points;- Groundwater extraction works are represented by point symbols, and only works with a capacity ≥ 20m3/day are displayed;- Faults on the 1:50,000 scale groundwater resource map show water-bearing, predicted water-bearing, and undefined water-bearing conditions, represented by bold red lines;- Groundwater utilization and extraction orientation are shown by tables accompanied by related information.

For further regulations, see Circular 15/2013/TT-BTNMT effective from August 5, 2013.
