The number of candidates participating in the national exam for excellent students is regulated as follows:
- National competition for excellent students:
+ The team of each contestant in each contestant unit (except for the Hanoi contestant) has a maximum of 06 candidates; The team has the maximum number of contestants, and 80% of the number of candidates or more won prizes in two (02) consecutive national exams for excellent students, which the Ministry of Education and Training considers should increase to a maximum of 10 candidates.
+ The team of each exam subject in the Hanoi competition unit has a maximum of 12 candidates; The team has the maximum number of contestants, and 80% of the candidates or more won prizes in two (02) consecutive national exams for excellent students, which the Ministry of Education and Training considers should increase to a maximum of 20 candidates.
- Olympiad team selection exam: The number of candidates participating in each subject is decided by the Ministry of Education and Training each year, ensuring that they fully meet the requirements specified in Clause 2, Article 4 of the Regulations promulgated together with Circular 56/2011/TT-BGDDT.

The subjects and conditions for participating in the national exam for excellent students are detailed as follows:
(1) National exam for excellent students
- Each Department of Education and Training, boarding general school for ethnic minorities under the Ministry of Education and Training, and each university, academy, and university has a specialized upper secondary school be registered as a contestant;
- The candidate is a student studying at the high school level, with a rating of good or excellent in conduct (or training) and academically (or academically) according to the results of the end of the term (or school year) adjacent to the exam and selected for the team of the contestant;
- Each candidate is only allowed to participate in one exam.
(2) Olympic team selection exam: candidates are high school students and fall into one of the following categories:
- To be selected by the Ministry of Education and Training among students who have won prizes in the national exam for excellent students in the same year according to the principle of selection from high to low according to test scores; ensure that the number of students selected for each subject does not exceed 8 times the number of students who need to be selected for the national team to participate in the international Olympic competition in that subject;
- To not participate in the national competition for excellent students in the same year, but participated in training to prepare for the regional and international Olympic competitions in the previous year.

According to Article 7 of the Regulation promulgated together with Circular 56/2011/TT-BGDDT, the duration of the national exam for excellent students is regulated as follows:
- The national exam for excellent students has two (02) sessions for Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics and Foreign Languages; there is one (01) exam for the subjects of Literature, History, Geography. Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects may have one more (01) practice exam.
The test time for the written exam and the Informatics exam is 180 minutes.
Time for the test of the practical exam for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the speaking test for Foreign Language subjects:
comply with the Guidelines for organizing the national exam for excellent students (hereinafter referred to as the Instructions for organizing the exam) annually of the Ministry of Education and Training.
- The Olympic team selection exam has two (02) sessions for each subject; only Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects have one more (01) practice exam.
The test time for informatics is 300 minutes/session, Maths is 270 minutes/session, Biology subject is 180 minutes of written test, 60 minutes of multiple choice test, and the remaining subjects are 240 minutes/exam.
Exam time of the practical exam for Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects: comply with the Guidelines for organizing the annual exam of the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam.
