An Overview of Topographic Surveying at the College Level in Vietnam

Recently, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Vietnam issued Circular 23/2019/TT-BLDTBXH on the minimum volume of knowledge and competency requirements that learners must achieve upon graduating from intermediate and college levels for sectors and professions in the fields of computing, information technology, and technical technology.

According to the regulations issued along with Circular 21/2019/TT-BLDTBXH of Vietnam, topographic surveying at the college level is a discipline and profession involving the surveying, calculating, and drawing various types of maps and topographic sections; monitoring surface topography deformations; preliminarily positioning structures from design drawings to the field; conducting inspections during construction, completion, acceptance, handover of products, meeting level 5 requirements in the Vietnamese National Qualifications Framework.

Those working in the topographic surveying profession often operate in regions with complex topography and varying natural and social conditions, typically using highly accurate devices and tools; the work is collective in nature. Therefore, professionals must have good health, strong professional ethics, and the necessary knowledge and skills to perform their duties.

Graduates in the field of topographic surveying at the college level may find job opportunities at surveying and mapping enterprises, design consulting firms, mechanical construction companies, and firms involved in the construction of traffic projects, irrigation, hydropower, civil construction, and industrial buildings, among others.

Note: Upon graduation, learners must meet minimum requirements such as being careful, meticulous, serious, and economical with materials and resources; having the ability to work independently or in groups, solving complex problems in changing work conditions; being able to guide and supervise others in their work; evaluating the performance of both themselves and team members; ensuring the planning and progress of assigned tasks; possessing professional ethics and honesty with measurement and computation results, preliminary structure positioning; taking responsibility for individual work and team tasks; ensuring safety for people, machines, devices, and tools during work; adhering to processes for checking and calibrating surveying instruments.
