Storms and Tropical Depressions: Definitions and Information
In Clauses 6 and 7, Article 4, Decision 03/2020/QD-TTg provides regulations on typhoons and tropical depressions as follows:
- A typhoon is a tropical cyclone with the strongest winds starting from level 8 and may have gusts. A typhoon with the strongest winds from level 10 to level 11 is called a strong typhoon; from level 12 to level 15 is called a very strong typhoon; from level 16 onwards is called a super typhoon (Appendix IV of this Decision).
- A tropical depression is a tropical cyclone with the strongest winds from level 6 to level 7 and may have gusts (Appendix IV of this Decision).
Additionally, in Clauses 8 and 9, Article 4, Decision 03/2020/QD-TTg also stipulates:
- Typhoon or tropical depression landfall is when the center of the typhoon or tropical depression has entered the mainland.
- Typhoon or tropical depression dissipation is when the typhoon or tropical depression has weakened into a low-pressure area with the strongest winds below level 6.
