What is the formula for calculating the area of a rectangle? At what grade level is the formula for calculating the area of a rectangle taught in Vietnam?
What is the formula for calculating the area of a rectangle?
The formula for calculating the area of a rectangle is very simple:
Area = Length x Width |
*Example: If a rectangle has a length of 10cm and a width of 5cm, the area of that rectangle will be:
Area = 10cm x 5cm = 50 cm²
*In which:
S: Symbol for area
a: Length of the rectangle
b: Width of the rectangle
*Note:
Measurement units: When calculating the area, you need to pay attention to the units of measure for length and width. For example, if the length and width are measured in cm, the area will be in cm².
Square: A square is a special case of a rectangle, where the length equals the width. Therefore, to calculate the area of a square, one can also use the formula: Area = side x side.
Some Sample Exercises for Reference:
Exercise 1: A rectangle has a length of 8cm and a width of 5cm. Calculate the area of that rectangle.
Exercise 2: A rectangular plot of land has a length of 25m and a width of 12m. Calculate the area of that plot of land.
Exercise 3: A rectangular piece of cardboard has a length of 30cm and a width that is 2/3 of the length. Calculate the area of that piece of cardboard.
Exercise 4: A rectangle has a perimeter of 36cm and the length is twice the width. Calculate the area of that rectangle.
Exercise 5: A school yard has a width of 40m and an area equal to the area of a square plot of land with a side of 60m. Calculate the length of the school yard.
*Solution Guide:
To solve the above problems, follow these steps:
Step 1: Read the problem carefully: Identify the shape (rectangle), the known quantities (length, width, perimeter, area), and the unknown quantity (area).
Step 2: Apply the formula: Use the formula S = a x b to calculate the area.
Step 3: Perform the calculation: Multiply to find the result.
Step 4: Write the answer: Clearly write the answer along with the unit of area (e.g., cm², m²).

At what grade level is the formula for calculating the area of a rectangle taught in Vietnam?
According to section V of the Appendix on the primary school mathematics curriculum issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, teaching grade 3 Mathematics includes the following requirements:
In the Measurement section
In the topic Calculations and estimations with measurements, grade 3 students will learn to:
- Perform conversions and calculations with length measurements (mm, cm, dm, m, km); area (cm²); mass (g, kg); volume (ml, l); time (minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years); Vietnamese currency.
- Calculate the perimeter of triangles, quadrilaterals, rectangles, squares when knowing the side lengths.
- Calculate the area of a rectangle and a square.
- Make reasonable estimations of measurement results in some simple cases (e.g., the weight of a chicken is around 2kg,...).
- Solve some practical problems related to measurements.
Hence, according to the above regulation, the formula for calculating the area of a rectangle is taught from grade 3.
What are principles for designing the grade 3 Mathematics curriculum in Bietnam?
According to section II of the Appendix on the primary school mathematics curriculum issued along with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the following principles should be ensured when designing the mathematics curriculum:
The mathematics curriculum adheres to the basic regulations stated in the general education program; inherits and promotes the advantages of the current and previous programs, selectively acquiring the experience of developing subjects' curricula from advanced countries worldwide, approaching educational science achievements, and considering Vietnam's economic and social conditions.
Simultaneously, the mathematics curriculum emphasizes the following principles:
Principle 1. Ensuring simplicity, practicality, and modernity
The mathematics curriculum ensures simplicity, practicality, and modernity by reflecting content that must be addressed in primary schools, meeting the need for understanding the world and the interests and preferences of learners, suitable for today's global approach.
The curriculum embodies the spirit of "mathematics for everyone," meaning everyone can learn Math, but each individual can study Math in a way that suits their preferences and competencies.
The mathematics curriculum focuses on applicability, linking with practical experiences or other educational subjects and activities, particularly those aimed at STEM education, connected to modern development trends in the economy, science, social life, and pressing global issues (such as climate change, sustainable development, financial education,...).
This is also expressed through practical and experiential activities in mathematics education in various forms such as: implementing studies, projects on Mathematics, especially those on applying mathematics in practice; organizing math learning games, math clubs, forums, seminars, math competitions,... providing opportunities for students to apply their knowledge, skills, and experience creatively in real situations.
Principle 2. Ensuring unity, consistency, and continuous development
The mathematics curriculum ensures unity, consistent development (from grade 1 to grade 12), comprising two closely linked branches: one describes the development of core content knowledge, and the other describes the development of students' competencies and qualities.
At the same time, the mathematics curriculum pays attention to continuity with the preschool education program and lays the foundation for vocational and university education.
Principle 3. Ensuring integration and differentiation
The mathematics curriculum integrates within the subject around three content streams: Numbers, Algebra and Some Analytical Elements; Geometry and Measurement; Statistics and Probability; integrating across disciplines through related content or mathematical knowledge used in other subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Informatics, Technology, History, Arts,...;
Integrating within and across disciplines through practical and experiential activities in mathematics education.
Simultaneously, the mathematics curriculum ensures differentiation. For all educational levels, the mathematics subject embodies individualized learning based on ensuring most students (across the entire country) meet the program's requirements; while paying attention to specialized groups (gifted students, students with disabilities, students in difficult circumstances, etc.).
For high school education, the mathematics subject includes specialized learning modules and contents that help students enhance their knowledge, practical skills, and problem-solving capabilities linked to real-life situations.
Principle 4. Ensuring openness
The mathematics curriculum ensures a unified direction and core mandatory mathematics education content for all students nationwide, while granting localities and schools the autonomy and responsibility to select, supplement certain mathematics education content, and implement educational plans suited to the conditions and characteristics of localities and educational institutions.
The mathematics curriculum only stipulates general principles and directions on the expected outcomes concerning students' quality and competencies, educational content, teaching methods, and educational result evaluations, without overly detailing to foster the authors of textbooks and teachers' initiative and creativity in implementing the curriculum.
The curriculum ensures stability and adaptability to development during its implementation to fit scientific-technological advances and practical demands.
