Regulations on naming, renaming, and official number of roads in Vietnam as of January 1, 2025, are stipulated in the Law on Road 2024 approved by the National Assembly on June 27, 2024.

Regulations on naming, renaming, and official number of roads in Vietnam as of January 1, 2025

As stipulated in Article 11 of the Law on Roads 2024, the regulations on naming, renaming, and official number of roads in Vietnam are as follows:

- The naming and official number of roads are regulated as follows:

+ Road names are assigned based on the names of historical figures, individuals who have contributed to the country; historical, cultural sites or events; local names or customary names. Road numbers are assigned using natural numbers or natural numbers combined with letters if necessary. In cases where urban roads overlap with other roads, both the urban road name and the names and numbers of the other roads are used;

+ The names and numbers of roads that are part of the international road network are implemented according to international treaties between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and relevant countries and international organizations. Roads that connect to the international road network use both domestic and international road names and numbers.

- In cases where road sections overlap with each other, the names and numbers of the roads managed at a higher administrative level are used, except as stipulated in point a, clause 1, Article 11 of the Law on Roads 2024.

- Naming and official number roads are not mandatory for village roads, hamlet roads, internal roads, or specialized roads; it's also not mandatory to rename or renumber roads if they pass through areas where the competent authority has decided to dissolve, merge, divide, or adjust the administrative boundaries.

More details can be found in the Law on Roads 2024, effective from January 1, 2025, except for points a and b of clause 2 of Article 42, Article 43, Article 50, and clause 1 of Article 84 of the Law on Roads 2024, which are effective from October 1, 2024.

The Law on Road Traffic 2008 will cease to be effective in Vietnam from the date the Law on Roads 2024 comes into effect, except as stipulated in Article 86 of the Law on Roads 2024.
