Hanoi-Vietnam: Counseling contents of reproductive health care for children by 3 age groups

The Vietnam Ministry of Health issues Circular 33/2017/TT-BYT stipulating principles and requirements for counseling and supporting children's reproductive health care (RHC) appropriate to each age group.

Children, parents, and guardians in Vietnam are advised about the following contents:

Age Group Counseling contents
Children from 0 - 6 years old
  • How to care for and clean the genital organs;
  • Preventing violence and child sexual abuse;
  • Sex education;
  • Abnormalities in the genital organs.
Children from 7 - 13 years old

Contents as for children from 0 – 6 years old, adding:
 

Girls:
 

  • Normal and abnormal menstruation, hygiene during menstruation;
  • Ovulation and pregnancy;
  • Masturbation phenomenon
Boys:
 
  • Ejaculation, first ejaculation;
  • Phimosis;
  • Penis hygiene;
  • Masturbation phenomenon.
Children from 14 - 16 years old

Contents as for children from 0 – 13 years old, adding:

  • How to prevent gynecological and andrological diseases;
  • Preventing unwanted pregnancy;
  • Appropriate contraceptive methods;
  • Preventing sexually transmitted diseases;
  • Safe sex;
  • Negotiation skills, refusal skills, self-value identification skills.

Additionally, children undergoing medical examination and treatment at a medical facility are also provided with information and advice about their current health status, treatment, and prevention directions.

According to the regulations, advisory and support activities must ensure the following requirements:

- Consultants and supporters must meet the professional requirements, practice conditions as prescribed by law, and be trained in providing child-friendly services;

- When advising and supporting, ensure friendliness, discretion, privacy, and sharing; use language appropriate to the age and understanding of the children;

- Direct consultation for children at appropriate ages or consultation for parents or guardians;

- Explain to children, parents, or guardians about the purpose, meaning, and process of examination in case it is necessary to examine the child.
