04 Groups of Microorganisms with the Potential to Cause Infectious Diseases

On July 01, 2016, the Government of Vietnam promulgated Decree 103/2016/ND-CP regulating biosafety at laboratories.

In accordance with the provisions of Decree 103/2016/ND-CP, microorganisms that pose the risk of causing infectious diseases in humans are classified into the following 04 groups:

- Group 1 comprises microorganisms that have not been found to have the ability to cause diseases in humans and pose no or minimal risk of infection to individuals and the community;- Group 2 includes microorganisms that have the potential to cause diseases but cause few severe illnesses in humans, can be transmitted to humans, and have effective prevention, infection control, and treatment measures in case of illness. This group poses a moderate risk of infection to individuals but a low risk to the community;- Group 3 involves microorganisms that can cause severe illnesses in humans, can be transmitted to humans, and have effective prevention, infection control, and treatment measures in case of illness. This group poses a high risk of infection to individuals but a moderate risk to the community;- Group 4 encompasses microorganisms that can cause severe illnesses in humans, can be transmitted to humans, and lack effective prevention, infection control, and treatment measures in case of illness. This group poses a high risk of infection to individuals and the community.
