Turning Left but Signaling Right: Is It Subject to a Fine?
At Clause 1, Article 15 of the Road Traffic Law 2008, it is stipulated:
Article 15. Changing vehicle direction
- When intending to change direction, the vehicle operator must reduce speed and signal the turn direction.
=> Thus, according to the above regulation, when motorbike riders intend to change direction, they must reduce speed and signal the turn direction. In case of signaling a left turn but then making a right turn, such a signal becomes ineffective. Moreover, it may cause traffic accidents due to confusing other surrounding vehicle operators.
In Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, there is no provision for penalizing incorrect turn signals.
To be specific: at Clause 3, Article 6 of the Decree, it is stipulated:
A fine ranging from VND 400,000 to VND 600,000 shall be imposed on vehicle operators committing one of the following violations:
- Changing direction without reducing speed or without signaling the turn direction (except when driving on a curved section of the road where the paths do not intersect);
=> Therefore, in the case of signaling right but turning left, the penalty as stated above will be imposed.
Sincerely.
