Are passenger vehicles allowed to reverse on highways?
According to Article 16 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law, the act of reversing a vehicle is regulated as follows:
When reversing, the driver must observe the rear, use necessary signals, and only reverse when it is deemed safe.
It is prohibited to reverse a vehicle in no-stopping areas, pedestrian crossings, intersections, railroad crossings, places with obscured vision, tunnels, and highways.
Thus, based on current regulations, passenger vehicles are not allowed to reverse on highways.
Penalty for reversing a passenger vehicle on the highway?
Clause 8 of Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP provides regulations on administrative penalties as follows:
Article 5. Penalties for drivers of automobiles and similar vehicles violating road traffic rules
- A fine ranging from 16,000,000 VND to 18,000,000 VND shall be imposed on drivers committing one of the following violations:
a) Driving in the opposite direction on highways, reversing on highways, except for priority vehicles performing emergency tasks as prescribed;
b) Causing a traffic accident and failing to stop, not preserving the scene, fleeing without reporting to the competent authorities, not participating in rescuing the victim;
c) Driving on the road with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 50 mg to 80 mg/100 ml of blood or exceeding 0.25 mg to 0.4 mg/1 liter of breath.
Thus, based on current regulations, the penalty for reversing a passenger vehicle on the highway ranges from 16,000,000 VND to 18,000,000 VND.
