According to the Draft Circular guiding nutrition labeling for foods, will there be 10 food products that do not need nutritional labeling in Vietnam?
In Clause 2, Article 1, the Draft Circular guiding on nutritional labeling for foods, proposes 10 food products that do not need nutritional labeling as follows:
(1) Food does not contain any nutritional ingredients specified in Article 5 of this Circular;
(2) Food ingredients;
(3) Products consisting of a single ingredient;
(4) Natural mineral water, bottled water (including those with only added CO2 and/or flavoring);
(5) Salt;
(6) Vinegar and vinegar substitutes including those with added flavoring only;
(7) Flavorings, additives, food processing aids;
(8) Yeast, food enzymes;
(9) Tea and coffee do not contain other additional ingredients;
(10) Unpackaged foods.

Information about energy value and substance content in Vietnam is expressed in what units?
In Article 6 of the Draft Circular guiding on nutritional labeling for foods issued by the Minister of Health, the way to write nutritional ingredients and nutritional value is as follows:
Way to record nutritional ingredients and nutritional values
1. Information on energy values must be expressed in kilocalories (kcal) or kJ. Information on protein, carbohydrate, total sugar, fat, and saturated fat content must be expressed in grams (g); Information on sodium content must be expressed in milligrams (mg) per 100 g or 100 ml of food and expressed as a percentage (%) of the reference nutritional value according to the instructions in Appendix I issued herewith this circular. In case the food is packaged in multiple servings, each serving can be recorded.
2. The nutritional value of nutritional ingredients specified in Article 5 of this Circular must be expressed in numbers, with complete information according to the instructions in Appendix II issued with this Circular.
3. For some types of food that do not contain nutritional ingredients specified in Article 5 of this Circular or contain nutritional ingredients specified in Article 5 of this Circular but the nutritional value of that ingredient is less than the nutritional value specified in Article 5 of this Circular. According to the instructions in Appendix III issued with this Circular, it is not mandatory to write that nutritional ingredient on the food label.
Thus, information about energy value and substance content is expressed in units as follows:
- Information on energy value must be expressed in kilocalories (kcal) or kJ.
- Information on protein, carbohydrate, total sugar, fat, and saturated fat content must be expressed in grams (g);
- Information on sodium content must be expressed in milligrams (mg) per 100 g or 100 ml of food and expressed as a percentage (%) of the reference nutritional value according to the table below.
- In case the food is packaged with multiple servings, each serving can be recorded.
Do foods that are produced, imported, and traded in Vietnam have to have food nutrition labeling from January 1, 2024?
In Clause 1, Article 8, the Draft Circular guiding on nutritional labeling for foods issued by the Minister of Health has the following provisions:
Implementation schedule
1. By January 1, 2024 at the latest, foods produced, imported, and traded in Vietnam must carry out food nutrition labeling according to the provisions of this Circular.
2. By January 1, 2025, food products produced manually must have food nutrition labeling according to the provisions of this Circular.
Thus, according to the draft, by January 1, 2024 at the latest, food produced, imported, and traded in Vietnam must have food nutrition labeling.
What principles must nutritional labeling for food meet in Vietnam?
In Article 4 of the Draft Circular providing guidance on nutritional labeling for foods, the Minister of Health promulgates the following principles for nutritional labeling of foods:
- Comply with regulations on labeling of goods according to the provisions of law on labeling of goods and relevant food safety laws.
- Ensures accuracy and must not cause false or misleading interpretations about the nutritional value of food products.
- Ingredient information and nutritional value on food product labels must be easy to understand, easy to read, easy to recognize, attached to the product packaging, and indelible.
