What is a Foundation Seed?
On November 19, 2018, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the 14th term, at its 6th session, passed the Animal Husbandry Law No. 32/2018/QH14 (referred to as the 2018 Animal Husbandry Law).
The 2018 Animal Husbandry Law stipulates the activities of animal husbandry; rights and obligations of organizations and individuals in animal husbandry activities; and state management of animal husbandry.
According to the provisions of Clause 14, Article 2 of the 2018 Animal Husbandry Law (effective from January 1, 2020), purebred breed refers to the grandparental and great grandparental breeds for pigs and poultry; the nucleus herd for other livestock breeds; purebred breeds for bees; and initial breeds for silkworms.
Specifically:
- The great grandparental breed for pigs and poultry is a purebred breeding herd or a herd selected to produce the grandparental breed.
- The grandparental breed for pigs and poultry is a breeding herd born from the great grandparental breed to produce the parental breed.
- The parental breed for pigs and poultry is a breeding herd born from the grandparental breed to produce commercial offspring.
- The nucleus herd is the best breeding herd with clear origins, raised and selected according to a certain process to achieve high genetic progress to produce breeding stock.
