According to Article 12 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army in 1999, the general requirements for platoon leaders in the Vietnam People's Army are as follows:

1. Strong political conviction, absolute loyalty to the Fatherland and the people, to the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam;

2. High revolutionary vigilance, ready to fight, sacrifice, and fulfill all assigned tasks well;

3. Moral qualities of the revolutionary; Efficiency, integrity, fairness, and impartiality;

4. Modelly following the Party's guidelines, policies, the State's laws and policies;

5. Promoting democracy, strictly following military discipline; Respecting and uniting with the people, with comrades; Being trusted by the masses.

6.  Political, military science qualifications and the ability to creatively apply Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh's thought, the Party's and State's guidelines, viewpoints, and policies to the tasks of building a comprehensive national defense, building the People's Army;

7. Knowledge of culture, economics, society, law, and other fields;

8. Practical skills to meet the requirements of the assigned tasks;

9. Graduated from the training program prescribed for each position;

10. Clear background, age, and health compatible with the position, military rank that the officer holds.

In addition, specific requirements for platoon leaders will be prescribed by competent authorities.

According to Article 13 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army in 1999 (amended by Clause 3, Article 1 of the amendments to the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army in 2008 and Clause 2, Article 1 of the amendments to the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army in 2014), the maximum service age for officers are as follows:

Highest military rank for officer positions

1. The maximum service age of officers serving in the army is as follows, based on military rank:

- Officer: Male: 46 years old; Female: 46 years old

- Commander: Male: 48 years old; Female: 48 years old

- General: Male: 57 years old; Female: 55 years old

2. When the army has a need, officers who have the following qualities can be extended their service age by no more than 5 years: Strong political conviction, absolute loyalty to the Fatherland and the people, to the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam; High revolutionary vigilance, ready to fight, sacrifice, and fulfill all assigned tasks well; Moral qualities of the revolutionary; Efficiency, integrity, fairness, and impartiality; Modelly following the Party's guidelines, policies, the State's laws and policies; Promoting democracy, strictly following military discipline; Respecting and uniting with the people, with comrades; Being trusted by the masses; Good health.

3. The maximum service age of officers holding command and management positions at units specified in points (d), (e), (g), (h), (i), (k), and (l) of Clause 1, Article 11 of this Law is determined by the Minister of Defense, but not exceeding the maximum service age of officers specified in Clause 1 of this Article.

Therefore, the highest military rank for the position of Division Commander in the Vietnam People's Army is Major General.

According to Article 11 of the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army in 1999 (amended by Clause 1, Article 1 of the amendments to the Law on Officers of the Vietnam People's Army in 2014), the maximum service age for officers are as follows:

Officer positions:

1. Basic officer positions include:

a) Minister of Defense;

b) Chief of the General Staff; Political Commissar of the General Political Department;

c) Chiefs of General Departments, General Department Directors, Political Commissars of General Departments;

....

k) Platoon Leaders, Political Officers of Platoons;
....

Based on the above provisions, the maximum age for platoon leaders serving in the army will be determined by the Minister of Defense, but not exceeding the maximum age for officers serving in the army based on military rank.
