Pursuant to Clause 3 Article 28 of the Law on Residence in 2020 stipulating temporary residence extension as follows:

3. At least 15 days before the end of the registered temporary residence period, the citizen must apply for temporary residence extension.
Application and procedure for temporary residence extension shall adhere to regulations in Clauses 1 and 2 herein. After appraising the application, the registration authority shall update information on the new temporary residence period of the applicant to the residence database and notify the applicant of such update; and provide a written explanation for the applicant if the application rejected.
As regulations above, citizens residing legally in a place other than their registered permanent residence for more than 30 days must register for temporary residence and, as the expiration of the temporary residence period approaches, they must apply for an extension within 15 days.

What are procedures for online extension of temporary residence in Vietnam in 2024?
Based on the Administrative Procedures amended, supplemented, and abolished in the field of registration and management of residence, as well as in the field of registration and management of entry and exit under the authority of the Ministry of Public Security, as issued in Decision 320/QD-BCA in 2024, the following steps are outlined for the online extension of temporary residence procedures:
Step 1: Individuals or organizations prepare the required documents as prescribed.
Step 2: Individuals or organizations submit the online application through the National Public Service Portal, the Ministry of Public Security's Public Service Portal, or the VNeID application.
Step 3: Upon receiving the application for temporary residence extension, the registration agency will verify the legality and contents of the application:
+ If the application is complete and valid, the agency will accept the application, issue an Acknowledgement of Receipt, and schedule a result notification.
+ If the application meets the requirements but lacks certain documents, the agency will provide guidance on how to supplement and complete the application, issuing a Supplementary Instruction Sheet to the applicant.
+ If the application does not meet the requirements, the agency will reject it and issue a Rejection Slip to the applicant.
Step 4: Individuals or organizations pay the prescribed fee for the temporary residence extension.
Step 5: On the scheduled date indicated on the Acknowledgement of Receipt and result notification, individuals or organizations receive the result notification regarding the registration of residence procedure.
What documents are required for the extension of temporary residence in Vietnam?
Based on the amended, supplemented, and abolished Administrative Procedures in the field of registration and management of residence, as well as in the field of registration and management of entry and exit under the authority of the Ministry of Public Security, as issued in Decision 320/QD-BCA in 2024, the documents required for the extension of temporary residence are as follows:
- Declaration form for changing residence information, for individuals under the age of 18, the consent of the father, mother, or guardian must be clearly stated.
- Legal documents and materials proving the legitimate place of residence.
In the case of extending temporary residence at a unit of the People's Police or the People's Army, the application for temporary residence extension includes:
- Declaration form for changing residence information.
- For the People's Public Security: Introduction letter signed and stamped by the head of the direct management unit.
- For the People's Army: Introduction letter for temporary residence extension from a unit of battalion rank or equivalent.
In the case of extending temporary residence according to a list, the application includes:
- Declaration form for changing residence information (for each person).
- Request letter for temporary residence extension, specifying the information about the legitimate place of residence and a list of individuals applying for temporary residence extension. The list includes basic information for each person: last name, middle name, first name; date of birth; gender; personal identification number; and temporary residence period.
