Từ một người nông dân lương thiện, Chí Phèo bị xã hội đẩy vào con đường tội lỗi, trở thành một kẻ say rượu, đánh vợ, chửi bới. Cuộc đời bi kịch của Chí Phèo bắt nguồn từ sự bất công của xã hội phong kiến, từ sự tàn ác của bọn cường hào ác bá.

Bị vu oan, tù tội, Chí Phèo trở về làng với một tâm hồn đen tối, mang trong mình nỗi căm thù sâu sắc. Hình ảnh Chí Phèo với cây dao trên tay, miệng luôn lẩm bẩm những câu chửi thề trở thành nỗi ám ảnh của cả làng. Tuy nhiên, sâu thẳm trong con người hắn vẫn còn đó những khao khát được làm người lương thiện. Khi gặp Thị Nở, Chí Phèo đã có những khoảnh khắc tỉnh táo, muốn quay trở lại cuộc sống bình thường.

Nhưng xã hội đã đóng sập cánh cửa lương thiện trước mặt hắn. Cuối cùng, Chí Phèo đã tự kết liễu đời mình bằng chính con dao đã từng gây ra biết bao tội lỗi. Chí Phèo là một nhân vật bi kịch, là nạn nhân của xã hội phong kiến bất công. Qua nhân vật Chí Phèo, Nam Cao đã lên án mạnh mẽ chế độ xã hội tàn bạo, đồng thời khơi gợi lòng trắc ẩn của con người.
