What is the specified age of 5th graders in Vietnam?

Under Article 33 of the Primary School Regulations issued together with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT,  the age of primary school students is specified as follows:

Age of primary school students

1. The age of students entering the first grade is 06 years old and is calculated based on the year. Children with disabilities, those with delayed physical or intellectual development, children from particularly disadvantaged areas, ethnic minority children, orphans without caregivers, children returning from abroad, and children of foreigners studying or working in Vietnam can enter the first grade at an older age than the regulated age but not exceeding 03 years. Cases of children entering the first grade exceeding 03 years from the regulated age will be decided by the head of the Department of Education and Training.

2. Primary school students studying at an age higher than the regulated age in cases where students repeat a grade, students from particularly disadvantaged areas, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students with delayed physical or intellectual development, orphans without caregivers, students returning from abroad, and other cases as prescribed by law.

Thus, normally, the age of students entering the first grade is 06 years old and is calculated by the year. If students are advanced to the next grade annually, 5th graders will be 10 years old.

However, first-grade students may enroll at an age older than the regulated age by up to 03 years or more in some cases. In those cases, the age of 5th graders will be calculated based on their initial entry age.

According to Clause 1, Article 5 of the Regulations issued together with Circular 27/2020/TT-BGDDT, the assessment contents for 5th graders include:

(1) Assess learning process, progression and academic results of students satisfying requirements and specific display of capacities of each subject and academic activities according to formal primary education programs.

(2) Assess formation and development of traits and capacities of students via following primary traits and capacities:

- Primary traits: patriotism, humane, diligence, honesty, and sense of responsibility.

- Primary capacities:

+) General capacities: self-control, self-studying, communication, cooperation, problem resolution and creativity;

+ Specific capacities: language, calculation, science, technology, computer, aesthetic, and physical attributes.

What are the 5 main qualities required for 5th graders in Vietnam?

According to the Education Program issued together with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT (some content amended by Articles 1 and 2 of Circular 13/2022/TT-BGDDT), the 5 main qualities required for 5th graders include:

(1) Patriotism

- Loving nature and taking practical actions to protect it.

- Loving homeland, loving the country, respecting the symbols of the nation.

- Respecting, and being grateful to workers, and those who have contributed to the country; participating in activities to repay those who have contributed to the homeland and the country.

(2) Kindness

- Loving people:

+ Loving, caring for, and helping family members.

+ Loving friends and teachers; encouraging and motivating friends.

+ Respecting elders; helping the elderly, the sick, and the disabled; showing compassion to younger children.

+ Sharing with friends in difficult circumstances, friends in remote areas, the disabled, and communities affected by natural disasters.

- Respecting differences among people:

+ Respecting the differences of friends in class regarding dress, habits, and family circumstances.

+ Not discriminating against or isolating friends.

+ Willing to forgive friends' mistakes.

(3) Diligence

Eager to learn

- Attending school regularly and on time.

- Regularly completing learning tasks.

- Being eager to learn and read to expand knowledge.

- Being conscious of applying the knowledge and skills learned at school to daily life.

Hardworking

- Regularly participating in family tasks within one's capability.

- Regularly participating in school and community tasks within one's capability.

(4) Honesty

- Being honest and straightforward in studying, working, and daily activities; being bold in expressing one's opinions.

- Always keeping promises; admitting and correcting mistakes; protecting the right and the good.

- Not taking others' belongings or money without permission.

- Not agreeing with dishonest behaviors in learning and life.

(5) Responsibility

Being responsible for oneself:

- Being aware of maintaining hygiene, fitness, and health care.

- Having a disciplined lifestyle.

Being responsible for the family:

- Being conscious of taking care of and preserving personal and family belongings.

- Not wasting food or drinks; being conscious of saving money, electricity, and water at home.

Being responsible for the school and society:

- Voluntarily strictly following school rules and community regulations; maintaining general hygiene and protecting public property.

- Not causing disorder, arguing, or fighting.

- Reminding friends to follow school rules; reminding family members to follow public regulations.

- Taking responsibility for assigned tasks at school and in class.

- Actively participating in collective activities and social activities appropriate for the age group.

Being responsible for the environment:

- Being aware of taking care of and protecting green trees and beneficial animals.

- Being conscious of maintaining environmental hygiene and not littering.

- Not agreeing with acts of harming nature.
