"Sự tích hoa cúc trắng" is a fairy tale about the filial piety of a little girl for her mother. The story is about a girl whose mother fell gravely ill, and she climbed a mountain in search of a four-petaled white chrysanthemum to save her mother. After overcoming many hardships, she found the flower, but it only had four petals. Just then, the flower emitted a magical light and transformed into a thousand-petal white chrysanthemum. As a result, her mother recovered from her illness.

Telling the story "Sự tích hoa cúc trắng" is practiced in the 1st-grade Vietnamese language curriculum.

Telling the story "Sự tích hoa cúc trắng"

Long ago, in a small village at the foot of a mountain, there lived a girl named Lan with her family in a small house. Lan was a gentle, diligent girl who loved her mother dearly. She often helped her mother with agricultural work, cared for the plants, and did all the chores around the house.

One year, in the autumn, Lan's mother fell seriously ill. Lan was very worried, tending to her mother day and night but didn't know how to make her mother well again. She sought medicine and consulted healers, but her mother's condition did not improve. One day, she overheard the villagers mentioning a kind of flower that could cure all diseases, so Lan decided to climb the mountain to find this flower to save her mother.

She traveled all day, crossing mountains and streams, traversing deep forests in search of the flower. Finally, after a long journey, Lan discovered a field of radiant white chrysanthemums at the mountain's peak. She picked a bouquet of white chrysanthemums, hoping it would help her mother recover.

Upon returning home, Lan hurriedly prepared a decoction from the white chrysanthemums for her mother to drink. After one night, her mother felt better and gradually recovered. Lan was indescribably joyous, delighted to see her mother healthy.

A while later, on an early autumn day, Lan climbed the mountain to pick white chrysanthemums as usual, but when she arrived, there were only fresh white chrysanthemums left, with no trace of the miraculous flower. Lan was bewildered and regretful. She returned home with a heavy heart, vowing always to remember her filial love and devotion to her mother.

Since then, whenever people see white chrysanthemums, they are reminded of Lan's filial love and the healing chrysanthemums. The white chrysanthemum has become a symbol of boundless love and gratitude towards mothers.

Who approves the 1st-grade Vietnamese language textbooks?

Article 18 of the Charter of Primary Schools issued together with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT stipulates the use of textbooks in primary schools as follows:

Textbooks, teaching equipment, reference materials, and local education materials

1. Primary schools use textbooks approved by the Minister of Education and Training and are selected by the provincial People's Committee for teaching and learning processes in primary schools in their area; teachers and students use textbooks for teaching and learning activities to achieve the objectives, content of education, and the required competencies and qualities of students as defined in the primary education program; primary schools must promptly and fully provide information about the textbooks used at the school for students and their families.

Thus, the Minister of Education and Training of Vietnam will approve the 1st-grade Vietnamese language textbooks.

What is the process for selecting the 1st-grade Vietnamese language textbooks used in primary schools?

Article 7 of Circular 27/2023/TT-BGDDT stipulates the process for selecting the 1st-grade Vietnamese language textbooks used in primary schools as follows:

- Step 1: The Council develops a plan to organize the selection of textbooks for primary schools; and assigns tasks to Council members.

- Step 2: Organize the selection of textbooks at the professional teams

+ Based on the Council's plan and textbook selection criteria, the leader of the professional team develops a plan to organize the selection of textbooks for each subject, and reports to the leader before implementation;

+ Organize for all subject teachers of the primary school (including those on staff, contracted, seconded, guest lecturers, and cross-school teaching staff) to participate in selecting textbooks for their subjects;

+ No later than 20 days before the first meeting of the professional team, the leader of the team organizes for the subject teachers to study the textbooks of their subjects, draft reviews, and evaluate the textbooks according to selection criteria;

+ The team leader organizes meetings with the subject teachers to discuss and vote to select one (1) textbook for the subject.

If the subject has only one textbook approved by the Minister of Education and Training, the professional team selects the textbook according to the decision, without a vote.

The textbook selected must have the majority of votes from one-half (1/2) or more of the subject teachers.

If no textbook receives one-half (1/2) or more of the teachers' votes, the professional team must discuss and vote again; the textbook selected is the one with the most votes in the second round.

In both rounds, if there are two or more textbooks with an equal number of highest votes, the leader of the professional team decides on one of them.

Meetings of the professional team must be documented, including reviews and evaluations of textbooks by participating teachers, with signatures from the team leader and the recorder;

+ The team leader compiles results and creates a list of selected textbooks, signed by the team leader and the assigned compiler.

- Step 3: The Council meets, discusses, and evaluates the organization of textbook selection by the professional teams; verifies meeting minutes of the professional teams and evaluation forms as stipulated in Clause 2, Article 7 of Circular 27/2023/TT-BGDDT; compiles textbook selection results from the professional teams into a record, including comments on the selection process, the list of selected textbooks, signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Council.

- Step 4: The Council proposes to the leader the list of textbooks chosen by the professional teams according to Circular 27/2023/TT-BGDDT.

- Step 5: The primary school prepares a textbook selection dossier and sends it to the Department of Education and Training (for primary and lower secondary levels), and the Department of Education and Training (for upper secondary level).
