According to sub-section 1, Section 2 of the Content of the provincial statistics indicator system issued with Decision 05/2023/QD-TTg guiding on calculating population density:

Population Density

1. Concept, calculation method

Population density is the average number of people per square kilometer of territorial area.

Population density is calculated by dividing the population (either point-in-time population or average population) of a specific residential area by the territorial area of that region.

The population density of each province aims to reflect the geographical population distribution at a specific period.

Calculation formula: Population Density (people/km²) = Population / Territorial Area

Thus, population density can be understood as the average number of people living in a unit area of land (usually 1 km²). It reflects the concentration level of the population in an area.

The formula for calculating population density is as follows:

Population Density (people/km²) = Population / Territorial Area

The unit of population density is people/km².

High population density: Means that many people live in a unit area of land. For example, large cities often have very high population densities.

Low population density: Means that few people live in a unit area of land. For example, rural areas or mountainous regions often have low population densities.

Example:

Assume a province has a total population of 1,000,000 people and an area of 10,000 km².

The population density of that province would be: 1,000,000 people / 10,000 km² = 100 people/km²

This means that there is an average of 100 people living per square kilometer of the province's area.

*Significance of Population Density:

Population density is an important indicator in several fields:

Urban planning and socio-economic development: Helps governments and policymakers understand population distribution to plan the development of infrastructure, public services, and appropriate economic policies.

Environmental and resource studies: High population density can put pressure on the environment and natural resources.

Epidemiological and public health analysis: Population density can affect the spread of diseases and access to healthcare services.

Comparison between regions: Allows for the comparison of population concentration levels between countries, regions, or cities.

When do students in Vietnam learn about population density?

According to Section 5 of the curriculum for the Geography subject issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT the requirements for the grade 10 Geography program are as follows:

Human Geography

- Population and population development in the world

- Describe the characteristics and development situation of the world population.

- Population growth

- Distinguish between natural population growth (birth rate, death rate) and mechanical growth (emigration, immigration), describe the concept of actual population growth; analyze factors affecting population growth.

- Population structure

- Describe types of population structures: biological structure (age and sex), social structure (labor, cultural level).

- Population distribution

- Analyze the impact of natural, socio-economic factors on population distribution.

- Urbanization

- Describe concepts, analyze factors affecting urbanization and the impact of urbanization on socio-economic development and the environment.

- Compare different types of typical population pyramids.

- Draw population charts (scale, dynamics, structure).

- Analyze population charts, statistical data; process data.

- Comment on, explain population distribution through maps, documents, data,...

- Explain some population phenomena in practice.

Thus, population density is taught in the grade 10 Geography program.

What are the main characteristics of the Geography subject in Vietnam?

Based on section 1 of the high school Geography curriculum issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT regulating the features of the Geography subject curriculum:

- Geography education is implemented at all levels of general education. In elementary and middle school, geography education content is within the History and Geography subject.

- In high school, Geography is a subject in the group of social sciences chosen according to the aspirations and career orientations of students.

- Geography encompasses both social sciences (economic-social geography) and natural sciences (physical geography), providing students with basic knowledge of geography science, related professions, and the ability to apply geographical knowledge in life;

At the same time, it consolidates and expands the core general knowledge and skills formed at the basic education stage, creating a solid foundation for students to continue in geography-related professions.
