Under Section 5 of the General Education Program for Literature issued under Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the requirements for the 1st-grade Vietnamese language subject are as follows:

- Sit (or stand) with a straight back; open books and notebooks wide on the table (or on both hands). Keep a distance of about 25cm between the eyes and books, notebooks.

- Read the correct sound, rhyme, syllable, word, sentence (may not read precisely some words with difficult, less used rhymes).

- Read the passage or short text correctly and clearly. Read at a speed of about 40 - 60 words per minute. Know how to pause at commas, end of sentences, or at the end of verses.

- Begin to know how to read silently.

- Recognize the book cover and book title.
