How many days can a student in Vietnam take a permitted leave?

Based on Article 12, Regulation on the Evaluation, Ranking of Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary Students issued together with Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT:

Promoted, re-evaluated during summer recess, not promoted

1. Students who meet all the following conditions will be promoted or recognized as completing the lower secondary or upper secondary program:

a) The yearly conduct (including re-evaluated results after conduct evaluation during summer recess as prescribed in Article 13 of this Circular) is rated at "Satisfactory" or higher.

b) The yearly academic performance (including re-evaluated subject results as per Article 14 of this Circular) is rated at “Satisfactory” or higher.

c) Not exceeding 45 days of absence in one academic year (as per the educational plan of one day/week defined in the General Education Program, including permitted and unpermitted absences, continuous or non-continuous absence).

2. In case students need to re-evaluate conduct during summer recess, it follows the regulations specified in Article 13 of this Circular; students need to re-assess subject results during summer recess as prescribed in Article 14 of this Circular.

3. Students who do not meet the requirements specified in Clause 1 of this Article will not be promoted or recognized as completing the lower secondary or upper secondary program.

4. For students with disabilities: Based on assessment results as per Article 11 of this Circular, the Principal will decide on promotion or recognition as completing the lower secondary or upper secondary program for students with disabilities.

Students are not allowed to be absent for more than 45 days in one academic year, whether for permitted or unpermitted absences. If this number of days is exceeded, students will not be promoted.

Therefore, students are allowed to take a maximum of 45 permitted leave days in one academic year.

Do students in Vietnam need to join make up classes for permitted absences?

Based on Article 12, Regulation on the Evaluation, Ranking of Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary Students issued together with Circular 22/2021/TT-BGDDT:

Promoted, re-evaluated during summer recess, not promoted

1. Students who meet all the following conditions will be promoted or recognized as completing the lower secondary or upper secondary program:

c) Not exceeding 45 days of absence in one academic year (as per the educational plan of one day/week defined in the General Education Program, including permitted and unpermitted absences, continuous or non-continuous absence).

....

Hence, there is no regulation stating that students must join make up classes for permitted absences. However, it has been committed by the students that they will make up for the missed lessons and complete the assignments when writing the leave application.

Therefore, this is a responsibility that students need to self-consciously fulfill after taking leave by borrowing notebooks from friends and asking peers about the missed lessons. Even better, students should actively seek out online resources to revisit the teachers' lectures to reinforce knowledge.
