What are the fundamental stages when teaching Vietnamese Language for grade 5 in Vietnam?
According to Section I of the Appendix to the General Education Program for Literature Subjects issued with Circular 32/2018/TT-BGDDT, the characteristics of teaching Vietnamese language in grade 5 are as follows:
Vietnamese is a subject within the field of Language and Literature education, taught from Grade 1 to Grade 12. In primary school, this subject is called Vietnamese; in middle school and high school, it is named Literature.
Vietnamese is a functional and aesthetic-humanist subject; it provides students with a means of communication, forming the basis for studying all other subjects and educational activities in school. Additionally, it is an essential tool for teaching students about the high values of culture, literature, and national language; fostering healthy emotions, humanistic values, and compassionate living.
Through language texts and vibrant artistic images in literary works, by engaging in reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities, Literature plays a significant role in helping students develop and mature essential qualities and core competencies to live effectively and continuously learn throughout their lives.
The contents of the Vietnamese Language subject are comprehensive, including cultural, ethical, philosophical knowledge that interlinks with many other subjects and educational activities such as History, Geography, Art, Citizenship Education, Foreign Languages, Natural and Social Sciences, Experiential Activities, Career Orientation,… The subject is also closely related to real life; it helps students become more interested and attached to daily life, relate, and solve emerging practical issues.
The core content of the subject includes fundamental, essential knowledge and skills about Vietnamese and literature, meeting the standards for students' qualities and competencies at each educational level, and is divided into two stages: basic education stage and career-oriented education stage.
Basic Education Stage: The program is designed according to key themes corresponding to the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Vietnamese and literary knowledge are integrated into the teaching process of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The materials are selected and arranged according to the students' receptive capacity at each educational level.
The goal of this stage is to help students master the use of Vietnamese to effectively communicate in life and perform well in other subjects and educational activities; form and develop literary competence, a manifestation of aesthetic competence; simultaneously foster thoughts, emotions to grow their souls and character.
Career-Oriented Education Stage: The program consolidates and develops the outcomes of the basic education stage, helping students enhance language competency and literary competency, especially in receiving literary texts; improve skills in creating argumentative texts, and information texts of greater complexity in content and writing techniques; provide essential knowledge about literary history, literary theory that is practical for reading and writing about literature; continue to nurture thoughts, emotions, souls, and character for students to become responsible citizens.
Additionally, each year, students with a social sciences and humanities orientation can choose to study specific thematic topics.
These thematic topics aim to enhance knowledge about literature and language, practical application skills, meeting students' interests, needs, and career orientations.
Thus, it can be seen that in primary school, this subject is called Vietnamese; in middle school and high school, it is referred to as Literature.
Therefore, this is a fundamental stage when teaching grade 5 Vietnamese, where the program builds upon the primary themes corresponding to reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Vietnamese and literary knowledge are integrated into the teaching of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The materials are selected and arranged fit the students' receptive capabilities at each educational level.
