Analysis of the Poem "Bạn đến chơi nhà" - Sample No. 1:

Perhaps friendship is a feeling between strangers as deep and precious as romantic love. This is why ancient poets often incorporated sacred friendship into their works. A notable example is the poem "Bạn đến chơi nhà" by poet Nguyen Khuyen, a poem written about his friend Duong Khue when he passed away. That friendship is shown to be so intimate and cherishing.

"It's been such a long time since you came to visit me.
The children are out, the market is far away.
The pond is deep with water, I can't catch fish,
The garden is vast but the fence is thin, hard to chase the chickens.
The mustard has yet to sprout, the eggplant is just budding,
The gourd has just detached, the squash is in bloom.
For hospitality, there's no betel leaf,
You came to visit, it's just you and me!"

The natural intimacy of the greeting has turned into the verse "It's been such a long time since you came to visit me." We can clearly see the joy and happiness of the author upon meeting an old, close friend. The joy is so overwhelming that it cannot be suppressed, even for a moment. The use of titles like "you" and "I" shows the closeness and naturalness between longtime friends reuniting. The first line and the initial greeting fully express the preciousness and boundless joy of the author when the dear friend visits the house. But right after the welcoming greeting is the unexpected embarrassment of the host.

The expression is truly humorous and witty. In the past, people often entertained distinguished guests with homely food. But in this special situation, the living circumstances compelled Nguyen Khuyen to exaggerate his scarcity to the point where he had nothing to offer his friend, not even betel leaf. There's an old saying, "A piece of betel begins the conversation."

From the betel leaf used to entertain guests to the humble meal of fish, chicken, squash, gourd... all are missing. This also illustrates a bond that surpasses mere friendship—akin to that of soulmates or brothers, where the author does not hesitate to reveal his hardships to his friend without hiding anything. It is the most sincere and sacred friendship.

The poem's conclusion serves both as a summary and an explosion of meaning and sentiment. Entertaining a friend does not require lavish delicacies, high tables, full trays, but just a simple drink, with overwhelming emotions, and the two friends can fully enjoy the joy of meeting.

The word "friend" reappears with abundant respect and full familiarity. "You and me," two beings yet as one. They understand each other as if they have merged into one. This statement also reflects the disregard for the world around them, needing only the friend and the friendship, which is enough for the author's immeasurable joy. They may lack material wealth, but in return, they possess an invaluable, priceless friendship.

Two different people, two different figures, but their thoughts and feelings seem to merge and bond. They visit each other based on a deep, unbreakable bond—an eternal friendship. The poem teaches us to cherish and nurture friendship, to open our hearts to others, and never let material matters tarnish and overshadow the sacred value of friendship and kindred spirits.

In summary, the poem "Bạn đến chơi nhà" by poet Nguyen Khuyen is written in simple, sincere, and very natural language. Through it, we see a beautiful poetic soul and a profound friendship. This is a friendship built on mutual understanding, sharing, empathy, respect, and without any self-interest. The poem encourages us to reflect on ourselves, reminding us not to be swayed by material temptations, but to uphold the noble, pure, and loyal friendship that is inherent in Vietnamese people.

Analysis of the Poem "Bạn đến chơi nhà" - Sample No. 2:

The most immense love is that of a mother, the strongest is that of a father, the closest is that of siblings, and the most sacred, enduring, and lasting is that of friendship.

As a poet rich in emotion, Nguyen Khuyen is no exception when speaking of friendship. His timeless poems that mention friends are profound and vivid testimonies, truly poetic friendships. The poem "Bạn đến chơi nhà" by Nguyen Khuyen quite vividly expresses this. It is his most successful and representative poem, one that highlights and represents the Vietnamese traditional Nom poetry of the Tang dynasty style.

This poem was written as a memoir in his rare old age. It expresses his feelings for an old friend from the officialdom, now reuniting in the peaceful countryside—the place of his origins. Each word in the poem is smooth yet high, deeply emotional, intimate, and full of humanism. It portrays a straightforward, emotionally driven person. The opening verse is like a joyful cry, the origin for all the situations and emotions in the poem.

Reuniting with an old friend is immensely pleasing, especially when meeting in the rustic countryside. That bond is truly precious. After a life of urban grandeur, they still remember each other, still seek to visit and chat. Although the warm feelings are profound, the poem still contains cheerful and humorous details. Today's visit is truly valuable, and even more so after many years apart, yet due to circumstances, it is a difficult situation for the author: the children are out, the market is far, the pond is deep, hard to fish... a series of situations are listed.

It is truly ironic and full of humor. The natural, cheerful, innocent verses create a lively melody, exuding the host's hospitality towards a distinguished guest. Despite all the absences, even the minimal hospitality items like betel leaf are missing, the final line is surprising, delightful, and full of indescribable emotions.

That friendship transcends mundane rituals. The three words: "you and me" are the centerpiece, the focus of the poem. The rhythm suddenly changes, becoming intimate and sweet. It is unlike the three words "you and me" in the poem "Crossing the Pass" by poetess Ba Huyen Thanh Quan. In "Crossing the Pass," this phrase expresses the emptiness, loneliness in foreign lands, whereas in "Bạn đến chơi nhà," it is replete with sincere, pure friendship. In essence, the poet skillfully portrays the enthusiasm, warmth, hospitality in the face of unexpected, impoverished conditions. And behind those rustic words are two simple, gentle yet humorous emotions directed towards each other. Emotion is what the author hopes for and longs for the most, and that alone is enough to warm a conversation, a reunion.

The poem creates an image of friendship devoid of material wealth, not out of deprivation but rather insufficient, culminating in the line: "You came to visit, it's just you and me," full of richness and depth. This poem is not only a genuine expression of the author but also a philosophy, a lesson, a guideline about the ideal that friendship is superior to all wealth and material possession.
