Analysis of "Lão Hạc"
Nam Cao is an outstanding realist writer. The two main themes in his works are the peasant and the poor intellectuals. One of the exemplary works about the peasantry is the short story "Lao Hac."
"Lão Hạc" was first published in 1943. The story tells about Lao Hac, a poor farmer. He has a son, but because the family is poor and lacks money for marriage, the son leaves for the rubber plantations. His entire wealth consists of a garden, which is his son's dowry, and a dog named Vang to keep him company. After a near-death illness, Lao Hac's house has nothing left to eat. He reluctantly sells the dog. The money from selling the dog and the garden, he entrusts to the teacher neighbor, asking him to pass it to his son when he returns. Meanwhile, he asks Bin Tu for some dog bait to commit suicide.
The main character of the story is Lao Hac, a poor but emotional farmer. This is evident in his attachment, sorrow, and regret when he has to sell the dog Vang. Additionally, he is a loving father, always thinking of and saving for his son. Not only that, but Lao Hac also has a strong sense of pride. Despite living in poverty and hardship, he does not allow himself to act against his conscience or want to trouble anyone.
The teacher character appears as a narrator, referring to himself as "I." This character, a neighbor, can also be considered Lao Hac's confidant. The teacher is someone Lao Hac trusts; he tells him about selling the dog Vang and asks him to keep the money from the garden and the dog to pass to his son. Through the teacher, Nam Cao also conveys profound philosophies about life and ideology.
Besides the content successes, the short story also impresses readers with the author's unique use of literary technique. Firstly, it is necessary to mention the art of building and portraying character in an exceptionally vivid manner, taking one person to represent a group. Next is the art of masterfully describing the character's portrait. The combination of narrative and lyrical modes creates a multidimensional story. At times, it is a model narrative voice, at others, it evokes deep emotions through the feelings conveyed by the author.
Nam Cao's "Lão Hạc" deserves to be a great work. The story succeeds not only in its content but also in its artistic value.
Analysis of "Sơn Tinh, Thủy Tinh"
The legend of "Sơn Tinh, Thủy Tinh" is not simply a folk tale but also a monumental work in the treasure of Vietnamese folklore, reminding us of the traditional values and resilience of people against fierce nature. Starting with the ancient era of Van Lang, the story of "Sơn Tinh, Thủy Tinh" begins with King Hung wanting to find a suitable son-in-law for Princess Mi Nuong. In this context, we see the importance of mountains and people being prioritized by the king. King Hung's choice with simple, familiar betrothal gifts like "ivory tusks, nine-spur cock, nine-mane horses" showcases the author's creativity in expressing cultural and social details of that era.
When Thuy Tinh calls for rain and wind and waters rise, Son Tinh responds by raising mountains, creating a vivid picture of the confrontation between humans and nature. The way the people of Van Lang and Son Tinh unite, refusing to submit to natural disasters, creates a powerful image of solidarity and resilience of the Vietnamese people.

Analysis of "Chữ người tử tù"
With his skillful hands, Nguyen Tuan created a very unique story situation in "Chữ người tử tù." For short stories, the situation is crucial as it helps the plot develop, the character's personality reveal, and the writer's ideas become clear.
In "The Word of the Prisoner," the story revolves around a strange and tense meeting between Huan Cao and the prison warden. It's a paradoxical and dramatic situation since Huan Cao is a prisoner and the warden is a jailer; Huan Cao leads the rebellious army while the warden is a tool to protect and represent the royal court.
Huan Cao is a hero with dignity, uprightness, and possesses calligraphy skills likened to a talented person with a sword on his back and soft hands with writing talent. The prison warden, although living in deceitful and cruel environments, loves beauty and respects talent. Huan Cao is imprisoned physically but free in spirit, while the prison warden is free physically but imprisoned by conscience. Socially, they stand on opposing fronts, making the story situation more intense and dramatic.
The story situation aids the development of the plot from the encounter to the special treatment of the warden for Huan Cao, then to the misunderstanding of Huan Cao before the heart of the warden, leading to appreciation and admiration upon realizing the warden's sincere heart and recognition of talent and beauty. The character's personality is also revealed: Huan Cao as a talented and scholarly hero with heroic spirit and virtue; the warden, in Nguyen Tuan's writing, though living in a filthy, chaotic place, has a love for beauty and respect for talent, like a pure melody within a noisy, chaotic symphony.
Circumstances cannot change the inherent benevolence and goodness in a person’s soul. Through this situation, the writer's ideology is also expressed: Nguyen Tuan, a writer intentionally seeks hidden and unique beauty, even fierce and impressive beauty, he praises beauty, the beauty of soul and human character, the beauty of talent. His praise also subtly reflects his patriotism by valuing human talent and beauty.
With his talent and love for humanity and beauty, Nguyen Tuan created a distinct and engaging story situation, only a talented pen could succeed like this. "Chữ người tử tù" remains an enticing short story due to Nguyen Tuan's unique voice.
