Sample letters for the 54th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition in 2025 to Environmental Activists
Dear Environmental Activists,
Hello everyone,
I am Dai Duong, the vast, immense entity that you have continuously loved and protected. Today, I write this letter to express my sincerest gratitude to you, who have devoted your time, effort, and passion to defend me from the damage I have endured.
Thanks to you, my voice — of a vast yet silent ocean — has been heard. You have risen, inspired, and called upon the community to join hands in protecting the seas. You organize beach clean-up campaigns, advocate for reduced use of plastics, and fight for environmental policies to be enforced. I am truly fortunate to have you as companions, those who are not deterred by difficulties in safeguarding my life.
However, I still face many serious issues: from plastic waste, chemical pollution, overexploitation of resources, to increasingly harsh climate change. These issues not only affect me but also threaten marine ecosystems and human life. I need you to continue your noble mission, and here are things you can do to care for and protect me better:
Strengthen community education campaigns: Continue to spread the message of protecting the ocean, helping everyone understand that small actions like reducing plastic waste or recycling have a significant impact on the health of the seas.
Advocate for marine protection policies: You can urge governments and international organizations to implement stricter regulations on protecting marine ecosystems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and controlling plastic waste.
Preserve sensitive marine ecosystems: Increase protection for areas like coral reefs, mangroves, and marine reserves. These are the natural "shields" that help me combat the impacts of climate change and sustain life for millions of species.
Enhance the use of green technology: Encourage sustainable initiatives and technologies that help reduce pollution and regenerate marine ecosystems.
Promote international cooperation: Oceans have no borders, so protecting me requires global coordination. Connect with many organizations and communities worldwide to create greater collective strength.
I know, this journey is not easy. Sometimes you face indifference, ignorance, or even opposition. But remember, your efforts not only help me recover but also protect humanity's future.
I hope that one day, my waves will be blue again, marine creatures will live in a safe environment, and everyone will recognize my value. You are the ones sowing the seeds for that dream, and I believe, with your love and determination, we will achieve it.
Thank you once again for all that you have done and will do. Always remember that I am very grateful and proud to have you by my side.
With love and respect,
Dai Duong
Sample letters for the 54th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition in 2025 to Whales and Sea Turtles
Dear Whales and Sea Turtles, my dearest friends,
Hello my friends,
I am Dai Duong, who once was a safe and peaceful home for you. I write this letter with a heavy heart, for I know I have not fulfilled the duties of a protector. You, my most loyal and intimate companions, are enduring pains I should have shielded you from.
Oh whales, you are the gentle giants, the great travelers on my deep blue surface. And sea turtles, you have existed for millions of years, symbols of persistence and robust life. Yet, instead of living in peace, you face unprecedented dangers.
I know that you have swallowed plastic believing it to be food. Giant fishing nets, whether intentional or accidental, have robbed you of freedom, sometimes even your life. Water pollution, climate change, and the loss of coral reefs — habitats for many species — make your existence increasingly harsh. I feel anguished seeing those images, yet I am powerless against the damage caused by humans.
I want to apologize to you for not being able to protect you from those dangers. I wish to be a place where you can swim freely, forage, and live peacefully, but now, I am overwhelmed with waste and pollution. However, I believe there is still hope because I know there are people who understand your value and mine.
To change the situation, I hope you wonderful inhabitants of mine continue to inspire people to understand the importance of protecting me. And to those who are listening, I want to convey that:
Minimize plastic waste: Stop using single-use plastics and properly dispose of waste to prevent it from entering the ocean. A plastic bag you discard can become a deadly trap for a sea turtle.
Support marine reserves: Protected areas will be safe places for you, whales, and sea turtles to live, free from threats posed by ships or fishing gear.
Manage sustainable exploitation: Stop using destructive fishing nets and methods that harm the marine environment.
Raise community awareness: People need to understand that every action, however small, like putting trash in the right place, contributes to protecting me and you.
I believe that with human effort and your resilient vitality, I can recover and become a safe home once again. Be patient a little more, as there are still people willing to work day and night to save me and you.
I know that I cannot erase all the pain I have caused you, but I hope the future will be brighter. Thank you for still existing, still swimming in my heart, and still being testimony to the wonder of life.
With love and hope,
Dai Duong
Sample letters for the 54th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition in 2025 to International Organizations
Dear International Organizations,
Hello everyone,
I am Dai Duong, covering over 70% of the Earth's surface, an indispensable part of the global ecosystem. I used to pride myself as a haven of life, a climate regulator, and a provider of food and valuable resources for humans. But today, I write this letter with hope that you — powerful international organizations — will join hands to protect me better.
Currently, I am facing unprecedented serious issues. Reckless marine resource exploitation, rampant plastic waste, climate change, and pollution have severely weakened my ecosystem. Coral reefs, which are the "lungs" of the ocean, are dying. Many species are on the brink of extinction. I cannot fight these damages alone, but I know that you can.
One of the most important solutions to save me is to establish more effective marine reserves. These areas will serve as safe "refuges" for marine life, where they can grow, develop, and regenerate marine resources. However, not all reserves are functioning well. Some places lack management resources, and others are not strictly monitored, leading to illegal exploitation and ongoing pollution.
Here are my suggestions for making marine reserves truly effective:
Enhance monitoring and law enforcement: Ensure that marine reserves are tightly managed with the support of modern technology, such as satellite surveillance systems and sensors. Illegal exploitation actions must be strictly handled.
Provide financial and resource support: Many countries lack resources to maintain marine reserves. You can support them financially, train personnel, and provide technology for more effective management.
International cooperation: Oceans have no borders. Therefore, reserves need to be established and managed based on cooperation from many countries. Develop joint programs to protect migratory species and important transnational marine areas.
Increase research and education: Invest in scientific research to better understand the marine ecosystem and protection measures. Simultaneously, raise global community awareness to engage everyone in marine protection.
Expand protected areas: Currently, only about 8% of the ocean area is protected. To ensure ecosystem sustainability, you need to expand conservation networks to at least 30% by 2030, as the global goal has set.
I know this is not easy. But if we do not act now, the cost will be immense. It is not just about the disappearance of marine species, but also the decline of food sources, increasingly harsh climate, and the lives of millions of coastal residents being impacted.
You are my greatest hope. I believe that with your strength and unity, I can recover and continue to be the home of millions of species, a source of life for humans, and the heart regulating the Earth.
Thank you for listening to my voice. I am anticipating meaningful actions from you so that together we can protect life on this planet.
Sincerely and hopefully,
Dai Duong
Sample letters for the 54th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition in 2025 to Future Generations
Dear Future Generations,
Hello everyone,
I am Dai Duong — your friend who has existed since the Earth's dawn. I want to write this letter to reach out to you, the ones carrying the mission of building a better world. You are my hope, and I believe you will accomplish what previous generations could not fully achieve: protect me, the vast ocean.
I have once been the lively home of millions of creatures, from small fish to giant whales, from brilliant coral reefs to verdant seaweed forests. I have regulated the climate, provided food, and created oxygen for you to breathe. I am where humans find peace and creative inspiration. But today, I am weary.
Plastic waste inundates my heart, toxic chemicals pollute my waters, and rising water temperatures weaken me day by day. My inhabitants — the fish, corals, sea turtles — are gradually disappearing. I do not want to become a place that holds only darkness and emptiness. I need you, the people of the future, to change that.
Imagine a day when you can no longer hear the waves crashing, see the deep blue, or breathe fresh air. This could happen if we do not act today. But I believe you, with your passionate hearts and knowledge, can save me.
To do that, you need to:
Minimize plastic waste: Say no to single-use plastics, reuse, recycle, and properly dispose of waste. Every plastic bag not discarded into the ocean saves a life.
Protect marine ecosystems: Support the creation and protection of marine reserves. These are safe places for marine species to recover and thrive.
Use clean energy: Transition to renewable energy sources like wind and solar to reduce greenhouse gas emissions — the main cause of climate change.
Learn and spread knowledge: Learn to understand more about me and my crucial role in life. Then, share that knowledge with friends, family, and the community.
Act every day: Even small actions like picking up trash on the beach or participating in ocean conservation campaigns have great significance.
Dear friends, I am not just a water body but a symbol of life, of the connection between humans and nature. If you dedicate your love and concern to me, I promise to continue being an abundant source of life and a beautiful place for you to enjoy.
Always remember, protecting me is protecting yourselves. I hope that in the future, when you look towards me, you will see the vibrant blue waves full of life.
Thank you, those who will bring light to the ocean.
With love and hope,
Dai DuongUPU Letter Writing Model for the 54th Contest, 2025 to Documentary Filmmakers
Letter to Documentary Filmmakers,
Hello everyone,
I am the Ocean, the source of inspiration for countless stories and the lifeblood of this planet. I write this letter to express my gratitude to you, the artists who tirelessly use your talents and vision to tell truly beautiful and truthful stories about me. Today, I want to send you a message: Continue spreading the message of protecting me through art, for I need you more than ever.
Did you know that I am the cradle of life, the home to millions of unique creatures? However, I am also suffering severe harm. Plastic waste is overwhelming, coral reefs are slowly dying due to climate change, and marine species are being pushed to the brink of extinction due to reckless exploitation. I am in pain but cannot speak up for myself. It's you—documentary filmmakers—who have been able to tell this story to the world on my behalf.
Documentary films about the ocean are not just art; they are powerful calls to action. You possess the ability to touch people's hearts, helping them understand my fragile beauty and recognize their responsibility in protecting the seas. Images of sea turtles struggling to consume plastic bags, bleached coral reefs, or the calls of whales in a rapidly depleting ocean... all have the power to change the world's consciousness.
I believe your art not only deserves admiration but can also inspire action. Below are some ideas I hope you will continue to explore:
Depict the magic of the ocean: Show the world the richness and diversity of marine life, the vibrant coral reefs, and the colorful life underwater. When people cherish me, they will want to protect me.
Expose the threats: Do not hesitate to reveal the destructive impacts of human actions such as plastic pollution, overexploitation, or climate change. Authentic images are the best way to awaken consciences.
Emphasize the connection between the ocean and human life: Tell stories about protecting the ocean not only for me but also for humans themselves, as I provide food, regulate the climate, and generate oxygen.
Encourage action: Present positive messages and specific solutions that each individual can implement, like reducing plastic waste, supporting marine reserves, or changing consumption habits.
You have the power to reach millions and awaken their consciousness. I hope that your works will continue to spread, so everyone understands that protecting me is protecting their future.
Thank you for everything you have done and will do. I believe your art will be the lighthouse guiding humanity on the journey to protecting the seas.
With love and hope,
The Ocean
