According to Article 6 of the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese citizens 2019, the age of passport issuance is as follows:

"Article 6. Immigration documents
1. Entry and exit papers include:
a) Diplomatic passports;
b) Official passport;
c) Ordinary passport;
d) Passport.
2. Passports with or without electronic chips shall be issued to Vietnamese citizens aged full 14 years or older. Passports without electronic chips are issued to Vietnamese citizens who are under 14 years old or are issued according to simplified procedures.
3. Information on entry and exit papers includes: portrait photos; last name, middle name and first name; date of birth; sex; nationality; symbols and numbers of entry and exit papers; issue date, month, year, issuing agency; expiration date, month, year; personal identification number or identity card number; positions and titles for diplomatic passports and official passports in accordance with foreign affairs requirements."

How is the chip passport in Vietnam in Vietnam model regulated?

"Article 2. Passport form
1. General specifications and techniques of passports:

Is it mandatory to change to a passport with chip before January 1, 2022?

According to Article 6 of Circular 73/2021/TT-BCA providing for the effect and transitional provisions

- This Circular takes effect from August 14, 2021.

- Blank publications of passports and travel documents that have been provided to agencies before the effective date of this Circular but have not been fully issued may continue to be used until January 1, 2022 at the latest. according to the form of passport or travel document specified in this Circular.

- Passports and travel papers that were issued before January 1, 2022 are valid until the expiry date stated in the passport or travel papers.

According to Article 7 of the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese citizens 2019, the duration of entry and exit documents is as follows:

- Diplomatic passports, official passports with a term of between 1 year and 5 years; may be extended once for no more than 3 years.

- The validity of an ordinary passport is regulated as follows:

+ Ordinary passports issued to persons aged full 14 years or older are valid for 10 years and cannot be renewed;

+ Ordinary passports issued to persons under 14 years old are valid for 5 years and cannot be renewed;

+ Ordinary passports issued under shortened procedures are valid for no more than 12 months and cannot be extended.

- The travel document is valid for no more than 12 months and cannot be extended.

Based on the above regulations, passports with electronic chips will be applied from August 14, 2021, in case people have been issued passports before January 1, 2022, they will continue to use them until they expire. without having to change to a passport with an electronic chip.
