Currently, it is common for people to make the mistake of not using signals when participating in traffic. So, according to the current regulations, is there a penalty for motorbike drivers who do not use signals when entering or exiting roundabouts?

According to the regulations in the Traffic Law 2008, motorcyclists must signal in the following cases:
Case 1: When changing lanes:
Motorcyclists must drive within one lane and can only change lanes in permitted areas; when changing lanes, they must signal in advance and ensure safety. (According to Clause 1 Article 13)
Case 2: When requesting to overtake:
Drivers requesting to overtake must signal with lights or horns; in urban and densely populated areas from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, they are only allowed to signal with lights. (According to Clause 1 Article 14)
Case 3: When changing direction:
When wanting to change direction, motorcyclists must reduce speed and signal the turning direction. Simultaneously, while changing direction, drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians and bicyclists on designated paths, give way to vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, and only change direction when it does not cause obstruction or danger to others. (According to Article 15)
Case 4: When stopping or parking on the road:
Motorcyclists must signal to inform other drivers when stopping or parking on the road. (According to Article 18, Article 19)
Therefore, based on the above regulations, the law does not specifically mandate signaling when driving motorcycles in and out of roundabouts, hence signaling in and out of roundabouts is not a compulsory case. However, in practice, when driving motorcycles in and out of roundabouts, individuals should signal according to the principle “enter left, exit right”; signal left when entering and signal right when exiting the roundabout. Signaling aims to inform your turning direction and ensure safety for everyone, making road circulation more convenient.
It can be observed that failing to signal is a common violation among road users. So, how will motorcycle drivers be penalized for not signaling?
According to Point i Clause 1 and Point a Clause 3 Article 6 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, the penalties for failing to signal when driving motorcycles are as follows:
- A fine of 100,000 - 200,000 VND for motorcycles changing lanes in prohibited areas or without prior signaling;- A fine of 400,000 - 600,000 VND for motorcycles changing direction without reducing speed or signaling the turn.
Additionally, Decree 100/2019/ND-CP also prescribes penalties for failing to signal when driving cars as follows:
- Cars changing lanes in prohibited areas or without prior signaling will be fined 400,000 - 600,000 VND (according to Point a Clause 2 Article 5);- Cars changing direction without reducing speed or signaling the turn will be fined 800,000 - 1 million VND (according to Point c Clause 3 Article 5).
Thus, to ensure the safety of everyone on the road, vehicle drivers should pay more attention to signaling when driving.
