What Skills Are Required for Students Majoring in Vocal Music at the College Level?

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has issued Circular 40/2018/TT-BLDTBXH stipulating the minimum amount of knowledge and competency requirements that students must achieve upon graduation from intermediate and college levels for disciplines, trades in the fields of arts, fine arts, and languages, effective from February 10, 2019.

What skills do college-level vocal music students need to achieve? (Illustrative image)

Circular 40/2018/TT-BLDTBXH specifies the skills that students need to achieve upon graduation from college-level vocal music programs as follows:

- Apply basic and systematic techniques of the field; perform various singing methods from classical, folk, to contemporary styles;- Perform vocal works such as Romances, suites, folk songs, contemporary songs in forms of solo, group singing, choir... using basic techniques and skills as required;- Practice self-vocalization, learning new songs, harmonizing, solo, and group singing…;- Create vocal works in various styles;- Enhance acting ability and stage mastery according to the content of the vocal works;- Execute internal and external acting techniques; physically express when singing and performing;- Use a musical instrument to accompany singing or play simple musical pieces;- Apply musical analysis and simple harmonization skills;- Proficiently use sound equipment for singing such as microphones, music software;- Accurately and comprehensively select specialized sound equipment, major musical instruments for performance;- Organize and arrange safety measures for instruments, equipment, and performers;- Use basic information technology as prescribed; exploit, process, and apply information technology in professional tasks of the field;- Utilize basic foreign languages, achieving Level 2/6 in the Vietnam's Foreign Language Framework; apply foreign languages in the professional tasks of the field.

Additionally, this Circular also stipulates the level of autonomy and responsibility for students in college-level vocal music programs:

- Have a sense of self-study, self-improvement to enhance professional competencies; maintain proper attitude and professional ethics, sense of discipline, responsibility, and scientific working methods;- Operate independently, selectively and creatively absorb knowledge in artistic performance activities;- Work independently and in groups, solve complex problems in changing work environments;- Guide and supervise others in performing specific tasks; take personal responsibility and responsibility for the working group;- Evaluate the quality of work and the performance results of group members;- Communicate politely, elegantly, and culturally with the audience, colleagues, and employers.
