Recently, the Government of Vietnam issued Decree 72/2020/ND-CP detailing certain provisions of the Law on Militia and Self-defense Forces regarding the organization, building of the forces, and policies concerning the Militia and Self-defense Forces.
According to Decree 72/2020/ND-CP, the number of Deputy Commanders of the Commune-level Military Command is as follows:

- Administrative units of Category 1 communes, border communes, coastal communes, and island communes are allowed to have no more than 02 Deputy Commanders. Based on the actual situation, the provincial People's Committee shall submit to the People's Council of the same level for a decision on the number of Deputy Commanders of the Commune-level Military Command within the number of non-specialized personnel at the commune level as stipulated in Clause 4, Article 2 of Decree 34/2019/ND-CP dated April 24, 2019, of the Government of Vietnam, amending and supplementing certain regulations on commune-level officials and non-specialized personnel at the commune, village, and residential group levels;
- Administrative units of communes not falling under the above-mentioned categories shall have 01 Deputy Commander.
Additionally, the military command of agencies and organizations shall have 01 Deputy Commander. Based on the requirements of defense and military tasks as well as the organization and operations of agencies and organizations, the Commander of the Hanoi Capital Command, the Commander of the Ho Chi Minh City Command, and the Commander of the provincial Military Command shall consider and decide on the appointment of no more than 02 Deputy Commanders upon the recommendation of the head of the respective agency or organization.
