From October 20, 2020, primary school teachers in Vietnam are prohibited from criticizing students in front of the class

The regulations issued along with Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT have made changes regarding the disciplinary measures for teachers towards primary students in Vietnam.

To be specific, according to Clause 2, Article 44 of Circular 44/2010/TT-BGDDT, it is stipulated that students who commit mistakes during their study and training process, depending on the severity of the violation, may face the following measures:

- Reminder, criticism;

- Informing the family.

However, Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT stipulates that if students have faults during their study, training, and competition activities, depending on the severity of the violation, the following disciplinary measures can be taken: reminding, direct support to help students improve; informing parents to coordinate in helping students overcome their shortcomings. Importantly, teachers are not allowed to criticize students in front of the class, the entire school, or in general meetings with parents.

Additionally, this circular also stipulates the rewarding of primary school students. To be specific, if students have outstanding achievements, are exemplary in completing their tasks in study, training, and competition activities, significantly contribute to the collective as selected by classmates, or have other unexpected achievements, they will be rewarded by the teacher, school, and education management levels in forms such as commendation in front of the class or the entire school, awarding certificates of merit or letters of commendation.

More details can be found in Circular 28/2020/TT-BGDDT which comes into effect in Vietnam from October 20, 2020.
