Militia and self-defense forces consist of core militia and self-defense forces and widespread militia and self-defense forces. So what are the legal provisions regarding the duties of these militia and self-defense forces?
According to the provisions of Article 8 of the 2009 Militia and Self-Defense Forces Law, the militia and self-defense forces have the following duties:
First, they are to be ready to fight, engage in combat, and serve in combat to protect localities and establishments; cooperate with units of the border guard, navy, coast guard, and other forces to protect the sovereignty, national border security, and sovereignty and sovereign rights over Vietnam’s maritime regions.
Second, cooperate with units of the People’s Army, People’s Public Security, and other forces in the area to participate in building the all-people national defense system, defense zones; maintain political security, social order, and safety; protect the Communist Party, government, and the lives and property of the people and the State.
Third, perform tasks related to disaster prevention, control, and mitigation; epidemic prevention and control; search and rescue; forest fire prevention and protection; environmental protection; and other civil defense tasks.
Fourth, propagate and mobilize the people to implement the guidelines, policies of the Communist Party, and the laws of the State on national defense and security; participate in building comprehensively strong establishments and developing local socio-economic conditions.
Fifth, undergo political and legal education, military training, and rehearsals.
Sixth, perform other duties as prescribed by law.
