04 Steps to Determine the Area for Dredged Material Disposal in Vietnamese Waters

Recently, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment signed and issued Circular 28/2019/TT-BTNMT regulating technical standards for evaluating dredged materials and identifying areas for dumping dredged materials in Vietnamese waters.

The determination of the area for dumping dredged materials in the Vietnamese sea area is carried out in the following 04 steps:

- Collect, aggregate information, documents, and data to serve the determination of areas that can receive dredged materials.

- Propose feasible areas for dumping dredged materials.

- Detailed assessment of the proposed areas for dumping dredged materials.

- Compare, select, and determine the areas that can receive dredged materials.

Additionally, Circular 28/2019/TT-BTNMT stipulates that the determination of areas for dumping dredged materials includes the following tasks:

- Evaluate the characteristics, physical, chemical, and biological properties of the proposed areas for dumping dredged materials.

- Assess the impact level of dumping dredged materials on resources, environment, marine ecosystem, and socio-economic activities, national defense, and security in the proposed dumping areas and adjacent areas.

- Determine the boundary coordinates and area of sea regions used for dumping dredged materials.
