Title: Mother-in-law Threatens to Use Force to Compel Daughter-in-law to Bear a Son: What is the Penalty?
Section 3, Article 101 of Decree 117/2020/ND-CP (Effective from November 15, 2020) stipulates penalties for violations of regulations on coercive implementation of family planning as follows:
A fine ranging from VND 3,000,000 to VND 5,000,000 shall be imposed for any of the following acts:
- Threatening to use force, intimidating mentally to coerce others not to use contraceptive methods or to stop using contraceptive methods;
- Threatening to use force, intimidating mentally to coerce others to become pregnant; to have more children when they have already given birth to all boys or all girls.
Thus, a mother-in-law who threatens to use force to coerce her daughter-in-law to give birth to a son when she has already given birth to all daughters shall be fined from VND 3 million to VND 5 million.
