What are detailed schedule for the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday in Vietnam?
On November 26, 2024, the Office of the Government of Vietnam issued Official Dispatch 8726/VPCP-KGVX 2024 regarding the Lunar New Year holiday and some other holidays in 2025.
Upon the request of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs in document number 5152/BLDTBXH-CATLD dated October 22, 2024, and document number 5621/BLDTBXH-CATLD dated November 8, 2024, regarding the Lunar New Year holiday plan, National Day holiday, and some other holidays in 2025, the Prime Minister of the Government of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh, has the following opinion:
- Agree with the proposal of the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs mentioned in the above documents regarding the Lunar New Year holiday, National Day holiday, and rearranging workdays for the holidays of April 30th Victory Day and May 1st International Labor Day in 2025. The Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs shall notify administrative agencies, public organizations, political organizations, socio-political organizations, and enterprises and employees according to regulations.
- Agencies and units shall arrange and organize on-duty sections as per regulations and work reasonably to ensure continuous operations and service for organizations and the public. Special attention should be paid to assigning officials to handle sudden or unexpected tasks that may arise during the Lunar New Year holidays in accordance with regulations.

The Lunar New Year holiday 2025 for employees is as follows:
- For officials and public employees: Lunar New Year 2025 holidays begin from January 25, 2025 (i.e., the 26th day of the last month of the Year of the Dragon) to the end of February 2, 2025 (i.e., the 5th day of the first month of the Year of the Snake), totaling 9 days.
- For regular employees: Employees are entitled to a 5-day Lunar New Year holiday according to the Labor Code 2019.
However, in 2025, there are 2 weekend days before the 5 official holidays, Saturday and Sunday, on January 25-26, 2025, corresponding to the 26th and 27th of the last lunar month. Following the official holidays are another 2 weekend days, Saturday and Sunday, on February 1-2, 2025.
Thus, employees will also have a continuous 9-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2025. Starting from Saturday, January 25, 2025, to the end of Sunday, February 2, 2025, (ending on the 5th lunar day of the Year of the Snake).
Additionally, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs also encourages businesses to allow employees to follow the above Lunar New Year 2025 holiday schedule.
When can employees in Vietnam take personal leave while still receiving full pay?
According to Article 115 of the Labor Code 2019 on personal leave and unpaid leave:
Article 115. Personal leave, unpaid leave
- Employees are entitled to personal leave with full pay and must notify their employer in the following cases:
a) Marriage: 3 days off;
b) Marriage of biological or adopted children: 1 day off;
c) Death of biological or adopted parents; parents-in-law; spouse; or biological or adopted children: 3 days off.
- Employees are entitled to 1 day of unpaid leave and must notify their employer in case of the death of paternal or maternal grandparents, siblings; marriage of parents; marriage of siblings.
- Apart from the provisions in Clauses 1 and 2 of this Article, employees can negotiate unpaid leave with their employer.
According to the above regulations, employees are entitled to personal leave with full pay on the following days:
- Marriage: 3 days off
- Marriage of biological or adopted children: 1 day off
- Death of biological or adopted parents; parents-in-law; spouse; or biological or adopted children: 3 days off.
Note: Employees taking personal leave with full pay must notify their employer.
